On this coming 4th of July, I reflect on how much has been lost and gained in the United States, and so I sit and reflect at the places that mean so much to me.
Coming from a military family, I hope the lessons learned make us pause and think.
So here we stand, my wife and I in the middle of the golden gate national cemetery.
Here we visit, and we ponder the course of this nation. We visit what I call the "brass ridge". Here there are so many generals and admirals buried here, but not forgotten. As we walk through the greens and we stop at the tombstones of prominent and historical figures, I hear in the wind honor me, but remember the soldiers, sailors, Marines, Air force veterans that surround me and served this nation also. These were our men under our command.
Like Gettysburg, Manassas, Shiloh, the Alamo, Arlington and the national cemetery of the Pacific that I have visited. I remember with awe and wonder.
Another solemn place to visit. Moving to the soul and conscience.

I needed to have a large retaining wall along the property replaced. From the moment I met Jose, the owner of the company, I understood that he was very experienced, detailed, and knew exactly what he was talking about. His bid was prompt and very competitive. When the rains stopped, Jose, Osmin, and their crew started work, showing up at 8:00 every morning without fail and finishing their work day at 4:00. During the demolition and replacement of the wall, everyone was extremely polite and organized, and the site was left clean at the end of the day. The project, that also included replacing some stairs next to the wall, was completed on time and within budget. The wall and the stairs look great! I couldn't be more happy with Pacific Construction, and would highly recommend them to anyone in the Bay Area.
Our garage door was having issues and we called/texted a couple of businesses and they never called back or showed up. Arnold's was highly recommend on NextDoor. I called and spoke to John and he took my address and phone # and told me he wasn't be able to come until the next day. I was not expecting a call back; but he called and came the next day as promised. Very professional and punctual. Thank you John!!
We were hoping against hope that our roof would survive the storms of 2022/23 but no such luck. Our roof was 25 years old (our house is in SF's Sunset neighborhood)so we knew it was time. Luckily, our contractor friend recommended Al Jr's Roof Inc and we are so glad he did. We called and Al came the next day and gave us the estimate which was reasonable. We were put on the list and by early March our roof was done! They did a great job and yes, I went up to the roof with Al to check it myself! Al is a great guy and even better he and his team did fabulous job. And it has rained since they replaced it in early March and no leaks! Thanks Al, you guys did a great job!
Dr. Sherryl Quong and her staff are amazing, they explained my insurance benefits clearly and I did not feel pressured to perform any testing that is not covered by insurance. Unlike other offices, Dr. Sherryl Quong also does not charge for contact lens fitting if there is no change on the prescription.
I’ve seen Michelle twice and ended up getting a 10x package here because she’s amazing! She has the perfect touch. The place is clean and she is honest about what you need / don’t need, I appreciate that.
Wow! Dr. Kelly is amazing. He made me feel super comfortable and was incredibly knowledgeable and funny. I was nervous as I've only ever had one eye exam and have been having bad headaches. He diagnosed me with a new, mild astigmatism and didn't try to convince me to buy anything. Lisa at the front desk was also super knowledgeable and was not a sales person, thank god, she was a customer service professional to the max. She answered all my questions and was up front about what I truly "needed" and could benefit most from. Felt incredibly supported and I definitely trust them as medical professionals and small business owners. I am so grateful I found Dr. Kelly! Small, curated selection of frames. Accept VSP insurance with amazing rates and discounts available on certain frames. Discount for purchasing multiples. I left having got driving glasses and sun glasses at an amazing value.

Really liked this place. The first real time I tried judo. It felt legit. The instructor was good (Sensei Chris?) and I appreciated that he paid attention to the newbies, giving more detailed explanations and tips. Everyone was beyond just nice. The students (black belts and lower belts) were abnormally friendly and supportive. It had a great atmosphere. I only went to the Tuesday adult class but it was a very diverse mix of students from older to younger (including two new 57 year old students) and from experienced to newbies. I also liked the venue. Nothing fancy, but It felt like a real old time school, which is my style.
Feline did an excellent job styling and cutting my hair. Will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a reasonably priced salon. So happy I decided to go here.
all i have to say is AMAZING!!! I have had so much trouble with my hair salon experiences over the past years. every time i would ask for a certain color or style, i would never be satisfied. of course as any person with bad salon experience, i walked in feeling a little anxious even though I've heard great things about this place. I was greeted by Ms. J and immediately noticed how friendly and outgoing she was. first we talked about what I wanted done with my hair and she talked me through how the process was going to go and i really appreciated that. not many stylists take the time to truly listen to what and how you want your hair done. Ms. J cut my hair first and kept it long just like i asked! I then transferred to Naomi and she proceeded to color my head. She is so impressive and sweet! She gave me some great advice on how to keep up with my hair and she walked me through every step on what she was doing with my hair. I was beyond impressed with the results and I could not stop smiling. This was the first time I was satisfied with my hair after going to a salon. 110% recommend Ms. J and Naomi, I was so happy I went to Catch 22. Not to mention the beautiful ambiance!! Will definitely be returning back soon :)

Called the morning of to see if they are able to take last minute appointments. Yes, there was an opening 2 hours later. Took my son to get a haircut and loved that there was 3 different cars to chose from. He felt comfortable and didn't cry. Loved the cut and we'll definitely be back for his future ones

Dennis is a wonderful barber and an exceptional conversationalist. I normally dont enjoy sitting around waiting for my haircut to finish, but i had a great time talking with him. The final haircut was exactly what i was hoping for even though I didn't do a great job describing what I wanted

Today, I was blessed with a miracle. I've been shedding hair like a dog. There's hair all over the kitchen floor, the banyo floor, on my pillow, on my plate, on my computer... hahaha! So, I've started making some calls 2 days ago. After calling 3 salons, the internet led me to a barbershop. And when I called to explain that I was doing chemo and my hair has started falling out, and I wanted to shave all the remaining hair off. I asked if they do that. And the guy said they do and he would actually be happy to do it for free. For FREE!!! His kindness felt so good to my soul. I felt welcomed. Understood. And seen. He even offered to open the shop early so that there won't be too many people and for a bit more privacy. What a kind gesture. Tools were sterilized and sanitized. He was very gentle. No nicks at all. Smooth, clean, full head shave. While sharing stories and getting to know each other. Time passed by and it was an overall enjoyable experience. I had my mask on the whole time. I started coming to Sammi after admiring my sister's nails for years. It took me a while to start coming to her 'cause of my hectic schedule, as I used to get my nails done at the last minute. But after being referred to her (thanks to my sister) I am happy to say I am completely "hooked". Her work is amazing and she is just a wonderful person overall. She always pays close attention to detail and does it swiftly and seamlessly, yet at the same time you never feel rushed. It's always a nice, calm quiet vibe in the salon, balanced out with her fun & friendly conversation. Some days I know exactly what I want and she works her magic... And other days I can also be indecisive on what to do with my nails, and thankfully Sammi comes through to help guide me with her input when I'm in one of those moods too. Lol. Needless to say, she never disappoints. I am ALWAYS happy with the ending results. She is a true professional at was she does. Another thing I love, is that she does top-notch, quality work. Whenever I get a fill and pedi it LASTS until my next visit (every 3 weeks), I never have any broken nails or chips. Thank you Sammi!!

I've been going to Jennie's for years and I love it! They are consistently good and everyone is good so you don't need to worry who you get. Vogue Nail Spa, first of all, is very clean. Cleanliness is, for me, most important. Only things I want to leave with are less facial hair, beautiful fingers, toes & the relaxed satisfaction I paid for & they most definitely provide! I've NEVER had sore cuticles, nail fungus, wax burns, or a poor mani pedi experience!
The decor is open & refreshing. Vogue has multiple massage chairs & lots of space, so you don't feel cramped. The foot soaks smell good & tingle while the many chair settings relax you enough to fall asleep, except I'm so ticklish on my feet I giggle ridiculously. ? The plethora of polish colors are overwhelming & you can find ANY color of your choice, but there's always one that you want to try even though you already came with one in mind. AND while sitting next to other customers, you find yourself wanting to have done what they're getting because it's all fabulous. Ya only have 10 toes & 10 fingers, so... next time, I'll try that. As a busy new mom of two, I'm not able to keep up with my hair care as frequently as I'd like and I never feel judged or pressured to keep up with services like I have at past salons. I've been seeing MaryAn for nearly a year and I'll never go anywhere else for a cut. I have naturally curly hair and it's hard to find a good stylist who is confident in cutting curls. She is also incredibly sweet and really listens to everything you say. Gary is sooo nice and they make everyone feel loved and welcome. I love their animal stories... The shop is super cute and it just makes you feel good to walk inside. Honestly, better (and cheaper) than therapy.

Rick from Tavor Plumbing is super attentive and professional. Our water heater died due to age and he responded immediately and completed the work in a timely fashion. I'm sure everyone that calls him considers it an emergency, and he understood our needs and made completing our job a priority. He even saved us additional money by talking us through installing a new valve that was corroded at no extra cost. We will definitely call him again. Highly recommended!
Broken water heater replacement. A polite woman answered the phone at 8 a.m. and scheduled a service call with San Bruno Plumbers. Service technician Kendrik replaced the water heater in an hour. He was knowledgable and courteous, answering all my questions. Installation was done professionally in a few hours. San Bruno Plumbers has always satisfied me.

I can't say enough good things about Bart and everyone at 110/220. From start to finish their professionalism and timeliness was unmatched and so appreciated. After unsuccessfully searching for an electrician for almost two months for our complete home rewire and service upgrade I took to Yelp in a last ditch effort to find someone who could do the work that was now so far behind schedule and do I wish I had done it sooner! They were able to come for an estimate the same day and start the next week despite a busy schedule. They worked quickly and took care in the small details of the project. They are trustworthy and make you feel like you are in good hands, which is so important with such a significant job. Even when we had issues with our inspection due to an issue on the inspectors part, they saw it through and made sure everything was done as promised. Overall, I felt they are worth every penny and plan to hire them again for my next home project and have already recommended them to everyone I know looking for an electrician!

We have used Kleenet for the past 5-6 years for the carpet/rugs/upholstery in our Palo Alto home. The owner, Robert, provides an excellent service at a very reasonable price and the results speak for themselves. If you are looking for a more personal experience instead of a faceless company, I strongly recommend Robert and Kleenet. And, note, Robert only uses pet friendly products and our cat, Mr. Bingley, gave Kleenet two paws up.

Ricardo performed an earthquake retrofit as part of the EBB grant program and he was great to work with. He knew all of the requirements and caught some issues in our application to ensure that everything went through the process without issues. He completed the work on schedule and the inspection passed on the first attempt. Highly recommended.
Derald and his team are great. Our house is a Queen Anne Victorian in San Francisco and we worked with BMF to remodel our kitchen, install new flooring, remove walls and put in large glass doors to show off the great view. Derald blended the new work with existing victorian details, such as picture-frame wainscoting and ceiling medallions. The workmanship and attention to detail was first rate.

It was hard finding a new Veterinarian after our previous vet clinic closed. We tried a few, but none really stuck until we met Dr. Tais at Masson. She was personable and took her time getting to know each of my pups. The office staff, Sarah, Jennifer and Jasmine are also a very big reason we chose to stay at Masson, they're all super detailed and knowledgeable. It is so hard to find a Veterinarian that you and your pups like and it's even harder finding a great office team, but at Masson you get both! I am so so happy I found them.
By far, best vet I have ever gone to. Everyone there is so pleasant. They welcome you with warm smiles and greetings. The vets are amazing and genuinely care about your pet. I see Dr Chiu and she is not only an amazing vet but just a great human! She meets you where you are, in terms of your pets care and is so gentle and caring with your pet. I have also seen Dr Hauge (sp?) and she is also wonderful! I have yet to meet anyone there who isn’t warm and welcoming. I def recommend San Bruno Pet Hospital.
We had a wonderful experience today and will definitely work with shine mobile grooming again! We have a goldendoodle but like him cut short. Most groomers never listen to what we ask and give a typical teddy bear cut. This was a much better experience and we got exactly what we asked for.
Tell me what groomer would take the time to stop mid groom to walk a puppy to get his anxiety out of the way??? Felipe was considerate & caring towards our family pup. I highly recommend this mobile pet grooming company, specifically Felipe! He came to our home between the slotted time, when he was running a bit late he texted to update us. Not only did Simba come back to us well groomed, clean & smelling like blueberries (loved this scent by the way), Felipe took his time with him. Our pup is only 9 months, his third time getting groomed by a stranger, we will definitely keep going back! Thank you Felipe =)
I was gifted a postnatal massage at Mayahuel from my lovely colleagues and put the certificate to use about 3 weeks after giving birth. I have basically minimal experience with getting massages - the last massage I did was a Thai massage almost a decade ago probably - but I felt that Teresa's postnatal massage was fantastic! She spent about 10 minutes talking to me at first about postnatal self-care and what her postnatal massage is like to make sure I was okay with it. I like her number system of 1 to 10 for how light or deep you prefer your massage. 4 is average and what she recommends. Throughout the massage, Teresa was very professional. She covered the body areas that she was not actively working on and only exposed the areas that she needed. She told me what she was doing step by step. The pressure that she used was right at a level 4 so I did not need her to adjust at all. Her massage table was heated nicely though a little too hot for me but not to the point of uncomfortable. I'm sure I could've told her to adjust the temp but I honestly prefer running hot so it was okay. She spent a lot of time on my upper body which I loved since my neck and back were so tight. It really did wonders for me and I nearly fell asleep while on my stomach! All in all, this was really a great postnatal massage and I would not hesitate to return for another massage in the future! To all those saying it's hard to book an appointment, I recommend to basically check her website every day as there are spots that will randomly show up when people cancel (I assume). Initially I managed to snag a spot all the way in September (I was checking around mid-June) but then was able to reschedule to early July when a spot suddenly popped up.
I highly recommend Eileen and Truly Bodywork. I have been seeing her regularly for a few months now, and she does a great job every time. She makes my aches and pains go away. If you are looking for an awesome massage therapist, look no further. Eileen is the best!

He's not like any doctor, spine specialist, acupuncturist, masseuse, etc. He is like a mechanic for your body. He looks at you, then right away goes to all the painful trigger points with surgical precision, uncovers the ones you didn't know about, releases them all, massages all the deep muscles that are INSIDE your spine with ease, releases all the spasms or tightness that were hidden for decades, leaving you in shock and wondering why no one ever pointed them out. In only two sessions he already did more for my spine than all the doctors, spine specialists, acupuncturists, masseuses I have seen for decades, combined. He looks at your whole body instead of treating every symptom separately, which should be an obvious approach but apparently so rare. If you're looking for a relaxing massage, look somewhere else. If you want to fix your pain, no matter how old it is, he is your guy.
I had been meaning to try acupuncture for years and was always afraid of it. Now, I can't imagine not getting a treatment! My monthly sessions with Francine have become sacred to me. Her entire approach is so loving and with your highest good in mind the whole time. I also appreciate her support for small and local businesses; she always recommends shops and artists. She is amazing!!
