“I dragged my friend along with me to try their 60 min hot26 asana yoga class! We were rushing as class started at 7am and we wanted to ensure we'd make it before the doors locked. We got there just in time and were welcome by Regina! She gave us a quick rundown of the studio. They have nice lockers with keys, a water fountain and showers available. Class began promptly and it was comfortably full. Regina was a very lively and informative instructor. She gave helpful guidance on how to do the forms in class they were doing as they were slightly varied from what I am used to doing. The poses were comfortable and I could feel myself truly feeling zen through every pose.“

I have been attending GymClass workouts since the beginning of the pandemic when Shannon offered complimentary online workouts to the teachers of my district. This past year, I have attended her gym for in-person workouts and for the last 9 weeks have participated in her coaching program, Lift to Lose. I love the camaraderie of the women in her gym and the sense of inclusion and safety. We talk and laugh and the workouts fly by. Also, the classes are small enough that she will make sure you are doing the exercises safely.

Shanon’s Lift to Lose coaching program has been a game changer for me. I’ve learned so much about the importance of prepping food ahead and eating a variety of foods with protein. I love that she provides the meal plan for the week along with the recipes and shopping lists. The recipes are easy to follow and delicious. So far I’ve lost 12 pounds but, more importantly, I’m relieved that I have found a way to eat that I can manage with my busy schedule and not feel deprived. In addition, it’s not all about food and weight loss. During her coaching calls, Shannon focuses on weekly themes (e.g., sleep, mental health/changing negative messages, stress, movement, etc.). The things I’m learning from the coaching calls cross over to many areas of my life - not just weight loss/fitness. “First, a bit of background. Over the past few years, due to the pandemic, I've been holed up at home eating and drinking excessively without exercising, and my weight has skyrocketed. My belly has also puffed up, and since I mostly write code while sitting, I start to have neck & back pain.

Under my girlfriend’s coercion and persuasion, I started looking for personal trainers near the Peninsula. I found that most options were either large gyms offering training courses or personal trainers at regular gyms. However, regular gyms are too crowded for me, and the equipment is unhygienic, so they weren’t an option.

One day, I stumbled upon Wayne’s social media account account and saw that he shared a lot of useful information, including dietary advice. His fitness philosophy resonated with me, and he owns his own studio, which has a good environment and complete equipment. Since it's by appointment only, there are very few people, which fits my needs. This studio is located in downtown San Mateo, and there’s a small parking lot right behind the gym, making it very convenient.

With a try-it-out mindset, I took classes for two months, and the results were remarkably significant. I train every Wednesday and Friday at 8 a.m., with each session lasting an hour. I highly recommend my coach, Mark. He’s a very approachable guy who excels at encouragement-based teaching [doge]. He creates tailored plans for me; I have mobility issues with my left arm and neck, and he focuses on these areas during our sessions, providing me with suggestions for exercises to do at home. Since I’m reluctant to go to a gym, he also teaches me exercises that I can do with just body weight and simple dumbbells or kettlebells. Throughout the course, Mark has been very professional and meticulous, carefully demonstrating each move and correcting my form. He always asks if I have any questions, patiently explaining the muscles targeted by each exercise and its purpose and significance. Overall, after two months, my body fat has significantly decreased, my strength has greatly improved, and my upper body flexibility has also improved quite a bit. I've also learned many specialized exercises that are suitable for me. I highly recommend giving it a try!“

There’s really something for everyone here!

Also, Dr. Kelly has been my coach for a few years now. I can say with certainty that he’s very knowledgeable, receptive to all the changes I’ve needed in my workouts over time, and is always responsive and supportive. “Let me preface anything I say here with the fact that I am neither a natural athlete, nor have I ever liked working out.With that said, the Tosetti team has somehow gotten me to a point in my life where I can’t imagine a life NOT doing squats, punching bags, wrestling, and swinging swords. It’s probably high time I left a review, since I’ve been going here since September 2018.Fitness classes are like a giant game of “Simon Says.” Coach Melissa and Coach Geralyn are amazing, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people I’ve ever met. Their patience and encouragement when I started these classes went a long way to bolster my confidence. Again, I’ve never liked working out, so I also had no idea what I was doing, and being told what to do did me a whole lot of good. They were happy to start me off with baby steps and add challenges as I progressed, and are always ready to show you alternatives if you have certain limitations, such as joint issues.Wrestling classes—when I say I knew nothing about working out, I knew even less about wrestling. I actually started these classes because of the sword classes (that’s a long story). Coach Paul officially teaches these (with the occasional supervised wrestling sessions from… another Paul), and has somehow shown me, at 5’4’’, how to throw people who tower over me. The classes tend to be a mix of all levels of experience and weight classes, and Coach Paul will often cater his lesson that day to the needs of the class demographic. It’s a whole lot of fun.Lastly, sword classes are what I joined Tosetti Institute for (and since I joined, they’ve added a polearms class to the weapons repertoire). These are not the kind of sword fighting classes that usually come to mind in the modern era, such as the foil fencing you see in the Olympics. We’re talking historical martial arts here, with swords in a variety of sizes and styles—and Coach Paul definitely emphasizes the martial part of the art. This was EXACTLY what I was looking for. He draws form historical texts, but he’s a fighter first and foremost, and that’s what I think really sets his teaching off from other historical fencing schools—if you want to learn how to fight, he will teach you how to fight. I’m going to do a bit of bragging here, but some of our sword fighters are competition-winners (I’m not among them—I’m actually mediocre at best, but I love being able to learn from these awesome people).Really, I could go on and on about how much I love Tosetti Institute, and the people there. This was unfortunately the shortest I could keep this review while doing them any sort of justice, and it’s only an inkling of how much I love this place. Even sadder is the fact that I’ll be moving out of the area in the spring/ summer—of all the things in the SF Bay Area, Tosetti Institute and the people I’ve met there are what I will miss the most, and I don’t think I’ll ever find their equal.“
