“I joined at age 54 and wish I had joined sooner. Terrence, the owner and instructor, is great. He is patient, knowledgeable, and a good person. I enjoy the exercise, camaraderie, and kung fu history. The forms and self defense techniques are fun too. I would recommend San Rafael Martial Arts for any person at any age looking to learn a martial art and get some exercise.“
“Love love love this place!! My kids started karate here and I am so impressed with how Master Bentley (aka Head Teacher Derek) and his teachers meet them where they are and make them better. It has been awesome!!“
“Had to force my 14 year old son to go to the first free lesson. That was two years ago. He loves it. All of the Sensei’s have been wonderful. He looks forward to it every week now.“
“Outstanding! Instructors are patient, kind, disciplined, and care about their students. Awesome in so many ways.“
“The actual classes are amazing!!! Master Gus is SUCH a great teacher, and he demands respect in the nicest way. I even feel the need to respect him as we enter, but again, in a great way. He creates the environment of fun but also teaches the youngest ones (my son is 5), that you need to listen to be successful, you control your body, it doesn't control you, work hard, and you can do hard things. My son really loves it and I can see the growth. He already can count to 10 in Korean, say thank you, and does things I've never seen him do. My son is a bit of a goofball, and he needs some growth in the area of focus, but I think this will be improved with time in these classes. You get gymnastics, physical conditioning, the art of martial arts and some life skills all in one. What more could you ask for? Well, there is one thing I wish they had. In this heat wave I wish they had air conditioning! Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, but I almost wish I could give 4.5 stars because I know that's kind of trivial. It's just when we have to also be present outside and it's 99 degrees, yikes! Yes we could miss a class or two, but that's not what Master Gus would suggest ;). And I agree, if they are willing and get water breaks, they're fine. Maybe I'm just complaining because I'm the one who is hot haha. Try it out! Start at 4 years old! My other son can't wait, and we already had to buy him a tae kwon do uniform on Amazon because big brother had one and he wanted to join (but can't yet as he just turned 3). Can't say enough good things about this place. Hope to see you there!“
“I can’t say enough good things about this gym. Both the adult and kids programs are top notch in every way. The instructors are experts in their craft and create a fun, safe, and challenging environment. The best part is the people. There are great people here who want to improve their skills, grow mentally, get exercise, and get better together. If you are brand new to bjj or a seasoned competitor this is a great option. Come check it out!“
“My kids and I have been going to The Dojo for over a year now and have all benefited a lot from it. Sifu Phil is the real deal, having studied and taught several martial arts for decades, and has incredibly deep knowledge to pull from. He's also a great teacher for people of all ages and levels. My kids still refer to what they are learning as "karate" but are really learning a variety of American Kenpo, informed by Sifu Phil's other experience with boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, and more, striking a balance between traditional and practical. Many of the younger kids' classes are taught by Mr. Noah and Mr. Henry, who both have their own teaching styles but who all the kids love. They are both black belts who have been with The Dojo for a long time. Don't expect to get a black belt in a year or two! What I learn in the Monday and Wednesday (as of this writing) adult Tactical Kickboxing classes is a mixture of open-hand techniques and Western kickboxing. We spar--safely and with control--most nights to build up experience and understand how things really work. No hot dogs or tough guys with something to prove tolerated. Sifus Phil and Rachelle also encourage youth development through The Dojo's junior instructor program that allows kids of the right age, level and temperament start guiding other kids. The program has produced some really remarkable kids. The black belts act appropriately for their rank--it's not a badge, it's a responsibility. Finally, on a practical note, The Dojo is kept very clean! Hopefully this is helpful. I highly recommend The Dojo.“
