“I have been going there for 7years. Gabby the owner not only is my teacher but has become my friend. The community of KMX is awesome some of the most amazing people I have met. As someone with a Karate background it is good to do a self defense style of fighting than a tournament style of fighting. This is a useful system for everyone.“

“The quality of any martial arts training depends largely on the dojo in which it is practiced. And the dojo is a reflection of the Sensei that leads it. Mikhail Sensei leads Alameda Iaido and Genwakan Iaido Dojō with such a humble grace, always putting his students first, regardless of rank or experience while exhibiting a true understanding and remarkable prowess with the sword. That, coupled with an unflagging dedication to the direct transmission of this 450 year old art form and a meticulous scrutiny in his own practice make Alameda Iaido and Genwakan Iaido dojō the perfect place to train, learn and grow as a martial artist interested in Japanese swordsmanship.Mikhail Sensei goes out of his way to help students achieve their maximum potential and has never ever allowed ego or pettiness to make its way into the dojo either on or off the mat. His encyclopedic knowledge of all things related to this school of swordsmanship is shared generously and I personally have benefitted many times from his kindnesses and learned from his example. And this same kindness and humility he shares with anyone who steps through the doors of the dojo.(The dojo is also affiliated with the Kokusai Renmei in Japan and thanks to Mikhail Sensei nurtures the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu lineage through his regular attendance at seminars around the globe.)“

“Earlier this year, I was healed of a circadian rhythm disorder by a naturopath. I could tell that my kidneys were involved , so I decided to fine tune my kidney health via acupuncture (kidneys control sleep in TCM), and that's when I began working with the aptly-named Charity. It was a great decision. She taught me to drink way more than I thought was necessary, to do moxa on myself, and to drink nettle leaf infusions from time to time to tonify my kidneys. A few years ago, a psychic told me that someone who owes me money will pay me back, and when they do, I was to spend it on "pleasure." So, when my former boss paid me some back wages, I had Charity do a 12-session facial rejuvenation package on me, as well. The effect of this treatment-- like ironing out the dents-- is subtle and takes time; I think it may be working even after the sessions are completed. A couple of weeks after the last session, I met a man, who happens to be half my age, and we are now in a relationship. Thank you, Charity! It's always lovely to have a great, caring healer to help you feel your best physically and emotionally. Besides all that, I felt like Charity became my friend. We laughed a lot! She was generous with her knowledge and time when possible (Wednesdays) and I learned a lot from her. Ladies, listen to Charity's videos on her webpage. If you feel like you resonate with her thought process, you owe it to yourselves to experience Charity helping you to be your best.“

“I started here with Mr. Yoshida almost 25 years ago and took a long break. I rejoined about a couple years ago along with my 2 young kids, learning under Mr. Kawaoka and Mr. Maldonado and really glad I did! The way Mr. Kawaoka teaches is not just about martial arts, but there is so much to apply to life outside of Cal-West. I am seeing so many parallels with my professional life and things I'm working on personally as well. It's been such a great experience, I highly recommend Cal-West for ALL ages!“

“Sama Academy is nestled right in the corner of Pinole Plaza right next door to Trader Joe's. They offer Junior Martial Arts and Kickboxing. I signed up on a Thursday and they were running a special for $29.99 (continuous I believe) and this gave us access to 2 free classes AND my sons uniform. Pretty sweet deal. During our first class, we committed to a 6 month tuition. The monthly tuition really isn't bad and rates vary so I will not quote, BUT the schedule is very flexible allowing you to take your lil sumarai 4X per week, unlimited access. What I love most about Sama Academy is that it isn't just an organization shoveling out these classes, it's a family oriented, small local business adding to our village. I was very impressed during our first class. There were 6-8 students and 1 instructor. My son was being very shy, nervous, and meticulous about not wanting his socks off, and Sensei was firm yet gentle about the rules and allowed him to watch until he was ready to take his socks off and join. Sama Academy comes prepared for these classes because 2 more instructors were on standby to jump in and assist when needed which was amazing! The following class was a bit more full, but even better because of how organized Sensei has been with scheduling. There are staffing shortages everywhere so showing grace to establishments that are doing their best has been a virtue this past year. Post Pandemic, our kids need a place that they can go and wiggle all they want while being redirected more than ever before. Sama gives them fast paced, disciplined, structured FUN that will teach our littles not only self defense, but self discipline. Our instructor was a past and current student and she has been AWESOME! She knows when the kids are getting squeamish and redirects that energy with ease. If you have kids like mine that can't sit still if their lives depended on it, take them to Sama Academy and allow them to teach our kids how to manage that energy. If you're trying to get in shape while learning self defense, go to Sama Academy! And if you're searching for an extracurricular village for your family, gooooo to Sama Academy.“
