“This is one of the best gyms you could go to train at or drop into. It has good facilities great training partners and a laid-back atmosphere. The facilities include a very large matt area, central heating, multiple showers, separate bathrooms and locker rooms, a sauna, cryotherapy, And a more or less complete MMA training facility on the other side of the building so that the kickboxing classes can take place at the same time as the grappling classes. People at this gym understand more about wall wrestling than the average Bjj gym for sure. The people there are very friendly and also numerous. between the local wrestling culture the University and the MMA connections there are a ton of very tough Bluebelt ant every training session. They also have a good number of Blackbelts and strong female team members who compete in both grappling and MMA. Additionally, the culture of the gym is extremely laid-back and friendly. Because I am traveling I have been showing up at all hours including attending open mat Without taking part in the classes that precede them. Nobody has yelled at me about it or seemed bitter which is rare and admirable. Additionally, the first time I went there I left a bunch of stuff there and nobody moved it for two days when I figured out what I had done and came back and collected it. I am so grateful for this because my car keys were somewhere in the giant pile of filthy garbage that I left stacked on the chair and I am glad to have those rash guards back too even if their resale value is zero at this point. If you are moving to Pittsburgh I would definitely recommend paying a little bit extra to live within walking distance of this gym.“

“Excellent martial arts school! When I was younger, I studied a few different martial arts in High School and College, but I hadn't practiced in over 10 years. I started my son in the pre-school classes at Ryer's and I couldn't resist signing up myself after I saw the school/classes and met the instructors. The classes are different from any class that I've taken in the past. The variety of styles and techniques make every class interesting, fun and challenging. There is a 4 week rotation consisting of striking techniques, eskrima/knife, grappling and Brazilian jiu jitsu. I love the fact that at every level, we learn advanced techniques that we won't be "formally" required to master until we reach higher belt levels. The curriculum is the Counterpoint Tactical System which is a very practical martial arts system. Every class is fun, the instructors are great and the class is a great workout.Highly recommended for all ages/levels!“

“I practiced at Aikido of Pittsburgh for 25 years, until the COVID19 epidemic moved my family out of town. I will always be indebted to Shihan Masutani and her excellent instructors for their dedication to the future of Aikido.“

“My son went to Young Brothers in Aspinwall for almost 10 years! He has earned his third degree black belt. Over the time we were there, Mr. and Mrs. Master Norris were absolutely wonderful. They are consistent and professional while also being a lot of fun. My son's self confidence increased as he mastered the skills required to obtain each belt. They also emphasize being a good person with strong values. It was all around a very welcoming and positive experience for all of us!“

“Black Hawk Martial Arts is a great place to train, work on your fitness, develop excellent relationships and just have fun while sweating it out. The instructors (Master Ron and Ray) have a great understanding of each student's personal needs and abilities and are willing to work within those limitations. They teach traditional martial arts, but show us how to use it, if needed, in a modern day application. For youths, I have watched them gain confidence in themselves while learning discipline, focus, and respect. For the adults, including myself, we have learned more focus, strength, and confidence.Black Hawk Martial Arts is a great place for individuals or families to learn and have fun at the same time.“

I lost weight by the end of the year. Took up walking in the evenings. I told my 12 year old at home show me what you got. I thought I might end up going to hospital for a few moments. “The main instructors have combined Aikido experience of over 70 years. They also organize regular seminars, where legendary Aikido instructors teach several classes a day over a weekend, and if you have never been thrown by a 7th dan Sensei, you don't know what you're missing (actually, if these words make sense to you, you probably do).Complete beginners are welcome--you only need to bring comfortable clothes to exercise in. To enter, you go past the sliding gate facing the street, continue forward, and then take a left. The studio door is going to be in front of you. If you see woodworking equipment, you are at the right place; this studio shares a courtyard with Jones Furniture Design.“
