They teach respect, discipline, self-confidence, perseverance, patience, teamwork, leadership, and more. As a parent, I have benefitted from their insights as well and am grateful for their experience and partnership over the years.“

8970 SW Burnham St, Tigard“Learned self defense. Nice instructors, had a friend try it out and they welcomed him like as if he had actually been taking the class.“
“Our kids love coming here and they are learning so much! I love the way the teaching is approached: gentle, kind and firm instructional. All of the teachers do a great job of balancing instruction with fun. I also love that the kids don’t need to remember every little thing on test day or be perfect. They earn their belt in class and then the test is their time to shine. I would recommend it for every child. I wish we could magically have better parking, but that can’t be helped :)“

“I had some great martial arts teachers and some terrible ones when I was younger. I can say, without any hesitation whatsoever, that Michael is one of the best I've ever seen with kids. He manages to strike the perfect balance between physical and mental instruction, as well as balancing fun with discipline. I feel so very fortunate that my 9-year old daughter is in his class, and I wholeheartedly recommend him and his studio to other parents.“

517 Main St, Oregon City“In an area where there is a rich and widespread martial arts culture such as Portland, many clubs will have different vibes and ways that they are run. When finding a fit can be difficult, I believe Enso is unique in how it has something for everyone and what it offers for training.
I was fortunate to find Enso when I did: They were extremely welcoming, the atmosphere is fantastic and positive with instruction that often feels more personal and thoughtfully considered rather than rote and routine. There is room for people at all skill levels, especially notable is the number of high level practitioners who continue to train alongside the beginners, personally coach and support those still finding their way.
The culture here is second to none, it quickly became more than just a place to train, but a place I am extremely thankful to be able to call home.“

407 NW 17th Ave, Portland“Still going strong and accepting new students!I was lucky enough to find Ferrito Martial Arts about 3 years ago, it's been a blast. Instructor Ferrito is a wonderful teacher, during busy classes managing to be able to give one on one instruction on a wide range of techniques. I have found Instructor Ferrito to be a very patient teacher whether he is working with a beginner adult or a blue belt pre-teen, he fits his teaching to the student. This class has been great at giving me a good work out while providing vital self defense techniques. Farang Hapkido uses an effective mix of joint locks, strikes, grappling, and weapons to develop a self defense style that can work for any body type and is flexible enough to be adapted to any situation.I feel fortunate to have found a martial arts family with this school.“
4 - 8PM
4030 NE Broadway, Portland“Criticizing an instructor without knowing their background is absurd and when said instructor has moved on from competing to train a martial art that has such an extensive and rich history, criticizing that art is equally absurd. Small Circle jujitsu was developed by Prof. Wally Jay and is based on classical jujitsu, and incorporates judo, boxing, wrestling, Escrima and Wing Chun kung fu. So because of this, Small Circle techniques are not only applicable to jujitsu, but blends beautifully with other styles of martial arts. It's true they don't concentrate on ground techniques as does BJJ, and they're not a kickboxing or boxing school nor are they training competitive wrestling. They train a combination of non-lethal pain compliance control holds and methods of restraining and controlling opponents with throws, takedowns. There is a reason that police departments worldwide use similar techniques that are taught at Portland Jujitsu, it works Small Circle Jujitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu incorporate many similar techniques, but with. different emphasis that make both Jiu-Jitsu's so effective.Sensei Miller is also an asset to the community with his self defense/self confidence classes he teaches for the blind and kids classes. In addition to these classes he is contemplating adding upcoming classes for fall prevention and balance for seniors“

740 SE 106th Ave, Portland“This is a great martial arts class. The instructor is extremely patient while, at the same time, maintains discipline in the classroom. The prices for the classes and uniforms are great, belts are free, and students can make up a missed class by coming into one of his other classes. There also a free practice session in local parks on Thursdays & (I think) Saturdays hosted by some of the black belt students.“

9640 SW Sunshine Ct #500, Beaverton“David has been my trainer in boxing and muay thai for about a year and a half now and I cannot recommend him and his gym enough. Great group instruction and great 1-on-1 advice and correction from a trainer who has a wealth of experience. Pad work, bag work, shadow boxing, footwork drills, and light sparring--you'll do it all in this humble but functional gym. David has also trained champion fighters for those interested in competitive fighting, though there is no pressure for students to fight, and sparring with the other students is very safe and positive. Always a great workout. I've trained at Portland Thai Boxing and at gyms in Arizona and abroad, and Kilian's is subtly the best in my experience.“

4834 N Lombard St, Portland“My wife and I highly recommend Aikido Portland. The teachers here are incredibly skillful, thoughtful, and kind. They are able to impart and instruct intricate series of movements in a relaxed yet precise and disciplined matter. When we sit in on our son's lessons, we feel like he's not only having lots of fun learning a martial art but also gaining valuable knowledge beyond the physical aspect of Aikido: such as how to be respectful of one's teachers, others, and oneself; how best to redirect challenging forces one encounters; and more. Aikido Portland is truly a wonderful gem in the neighborhood.“
“My kids love Ki Aikido training with the senseis in Hillsboro Dojo. They are all volunteers but very dedicated to the students. It could be a little boring at first for the kids, but once they are into it, they love it. I also like the fact that they teach them about focusing, relaxing, cordinating mind and body and how to deal with difficulties in school and in life. You are treated like family here.“
“Sensei Fife is wonderful with my kiddos, they look forward to class weekly. The way he relays his messages is so impressive.“
