Aikido Portland

My wife and I highly recommend Aikido Portland. The teachers here are incredibly skillful, thoughtful, and kind. They are able to impart and instruct intricate series of movements in a relaxed yet precise and disciplined matter. When we sit in on our son's lessons, we feel like he's not only having lots of fun learning a martial art but also gaining valuable knowledge beyond the physical aspect of Aikido: such as how to be respectful of one's teachers, others, and oneself; how best to redirect challenging forces one encounters; and more. Aikido Portland is truly a wonderful gem in the neighborhood.

My son has been attending Aikido here for over 3 years, and I largely attribute his focus, discipline and patience to the example he had from the amazing Sensei who leads this studio (and the fantastic supporting Sensei as well!) It is such a gift to the community that they offer this class at such a steep discount, and it is so appreciated that they pass the savings onto the community, allowing more students to afford to attend. The facilities are in a shared community space (that is also constantly fundraising for the local schools), so may not be the top studio in Portland if you want the fancy bells and whistles, but you will find teachers with the dedication and...read full review

We were thinking about martial arts for our 8 year old boy for awhile and decided in January to visit a few places. The teacher, David, welcomed us in even though he was in the middle of teaching a class. He said our son could join the others on the mat if he wanted. After just 5 minutes he was so interested watching the class that he decided to go and participate.He loved the first lesson so much that we never checked out another place and enrolled that evening. He has gone twice a week since then (totally free for the first month!). Sensei David is patient and kind. He encourages every student from beginners to advanced.
