Started lessons here recently with my son. It makes for a great father-son bonding time. Sword (and other weapons) are also available for training. Wish I would have started lessons earlier!Sensei Tim is top notch and takes karate seriously. He sets the standard for selflessly upholding the true values and purpose of karate and passing that on to his students. Highly recommend.

My 6 year old and I both do karate here. Sensei Tim clearly knows his work well and provides excellent discipline for the kids. I chose to join my son after watching for a few lessons because it’s super reasonably priced and it seemed like a good workout; it is:) My son has only been here for a month but he already repeats the lessons about courtesy and respect that they discuss each class which is really great to hear.

I had the honor of working with Sensei Tim for 8 years. I was impressed how much he cared about every student and was always a positive influence. Whether for yourself or your children there is absolutely nobody better than Sensei Tim at Rising Sun Karate! Thank You!!!

Beginning his training in 1971 under James H. Hawkes Sensei at the age of 13, Tim VanDenover Sensei has dedicated his life to top quality martial arts training, specifically in the area of Okinawan Shorin Ryu. VanDenover has been honored with 7 Hall of Fame awards, including USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame for most Inspirational and Innovative Instructor. Masters Hall of Fame Silver Lifetime Achievement awards. Action Martial Arts Magazine Hall of Fame for Outstanding Contributions to the Martial Arts. He was also inducted into the Molum Combat Honor Society in 2012. And the Hawkes International Society in with the United States Association of Martial Artists. In addition VanDenover Sensei is the Arizona State Representative for the USAMA.
