About University District Yoga
University District Yoga offers compassionate instruction focused on classical Iyengar Yoga. Tara, a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher (CIYT) and certified Yoga therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), has over 25 years of teaching experience. She has traveled to India to study yoga and attended the Iyengar institute in Pune several times. Tara's teaching style is knowledgeable, patient, firm, challenging, and kind. She teaches all ages and abilities, especially those suffering from overall stiffness and other physical imbalances. Tara enjoys teaching small semi-private classes, as it allows her to address the individual challenges and solutions that arise during the class. She encourages students to connect the mind to the body. Tara's classes are methodical and well-choreographed, with each pose building upon the previous for deeper opening and growth. She demonstrates each pose step-by-step, explains in detail, and watches as students practice and repeat, assisting and recommending alternate poses as needed. The slowness of her class gives students time to feel their bodies open and receive, and to connect their minds to their bodies and breath. Students appreciate Tara's care for detail and encouragement to improve one step at a time, which motivates them to deepen their practice with understanding, without succumbing to expectations of nailing it quickly. Iyengar Yoga's emphasis on form and alignment, as well as the use of props, make it the best way to learn yoga without risking injuries, especially under Tara's expert guidance.
If you want a class that goes through the motions, this is not it. If you want a class where you actually learn about the poses and grow in your practice, this is it. Tara's classes are methodical and well choreographed, with each pose building upon the previous for deeper opening and growth. Tara's teaching style is straight forward--she demonstrates each pose step by step and explains in detail. She then watches us as we practice and repeat, assisting and recommending alternate poses as needed. I appreciate the slowness of her class as it gives me time to feel my body open and receive and to connect my mind to my body and breath.
I am grateful to learn from such an inspiring, dedicated and knowledgeable teacher , Tara. Tara’s care for detail and encouragement to improve one step at a time makes me motivated to deepen my practice with understanding without succumbing to my expectations of nailing it quickly.
Thank you Tara for the knowledge, practice and excellence you bring through your teaching for Iyengar Yoga.
I've been studying under Tara for roughly two years now, taking both weekly online classes and her monthly workshops. Even though I live far from the studio I find the drive out to see her worth it. She creates a nurturing environment in her classes, I never feel like she forced me or anyone else into an uncomfortable or dangerous position. She is very understanding of yoga anatomy and how everyone's bodies are different and have different strengths and limitations, and she is able to guide you to your edge while not pushing you past that where you might injure yourself. I always feel very safe and comfortable taking classes with her. She herself is also an active student, learning to deepen her knowledge of the asanas and other limbs of yoga. She will bring back fresh perspectives and teachings that she's gathered from her own journeys and incorporate them into our classes, so they never get stale. I love iyengar yoga because of it's emphasis on form and alignment, and use of props. I feel iyengar yoga is the best way to learn yoga without risking injuries, you will really learn the asanas here, especially under Tara's expert guidance.
