University District Yoga offers compassionate instruction focused on classical Iyengar Yoga. Tara, a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher (CIYT) and certified Yoga therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), has over 25 years of teaching experience. She has traveled to India to study yoga and attended the Iyengar institute in Pune several times. Tara's teaching style is knowledgeable, patient, firm, challenging, and kind. She teaches all ages and abilities, especially those suffering from overall stiffness and other physical imbalances. Tara enjoys teaching small semi-private classes, as it allows her to address the individual challenges and solutions that arise during the class. She encourages students to connect the mind to the body. Tara's classes are methodical and well-choreographed, with each pose building upon the previous for deeper opening and growth. She demonstrates each pose step-by-step, explains in detail, and watches as students practice and repeat, assisting and recommending alternate poses as needed. The slowness of her class gives students time to feel their bodies open and receive, and to connect their minds to their bodies and breath. Students appreciate Tara's care for detail and encouragement to improve one step at a time, which motivates them to deepen their practice with understanding, without succumbing to expectations of nailing it quickly. Iyengar Yoga's emphasis on form and alignment, as well as the use of props, make it the best way to learn yoga without risking injuries, especially under Tara's expert guidance.
