Dr. Scharf was my dentist in Port Townsend when I was in high school at Port Townsend High School. I was allowed to walk from my mother's workplace to Dr. Scharf's office once or twice a week. I called my mother's office to let them know that I arrived at Dr. Scharf's office after I arrived. There weren't that many dentists in Port Townsend that at that time did dentistry on teenagers. I told Dr. Scharf some of my jokes about doctors. He smiled. I think he thought I was already graduated. I told him about the sports teams at the high school. He agreed that not enough students are athletes in that school district. He agreed to give me quality advice to keep my teeth as I aged. I noted that Dr. Scharf's receptionist always wanted me to make an appointment at the time I was given a Pop quiz during my Chemistry class. I told Dr. Scharf it's very important for me to have enough time to study for all of the classes and pass all of the tests and quizzes... because I intended to go to a college out of state. He asked me if I wanted a job at his office later. I told him.... I might want to be his accountant. He said... you're taking Mathematics in college. I told him... I intended to become a high school Mathematics teacher after I get a certificate in teaching. I asked for his recommendations on which college one of my former guardians son should go to. Dr. Scharf didn't hesitate. He suggested Washington State University. I suggested that college to that guardian. He said... they would ask the son. There weren't any dentists on the Peninsula who had Saturday appointments way back then.
The best thing I can say about any health care professional is true here: no scare tactics have ever been used on me and I've been given choices in treatment options. Another very nice quality is that everyone in the office washes their hands. There's tons of warnings out there that patients should demand health professionals wash their hands and I've always believed patients should not have to ask or demand. It's a best practice and I appreciate it.
Comment on the Dental Practice of Dr Scharf in Port Townsend: This is wonderful office located in Uptown. I have been treated there for over a decade. I have always been impressed with the quality of care. The staff ( all women by the way) have been competent & seem to enjoy their work. There is always new artwork displayed throughout the office. Beautiful, exotic wood used throughout. Re: the dental work. While it is difficult for a lay person to assess the quality I have always felt well cared for. One side note: presently I am entering my fourth week of having a numb tongue after replacing a crown in the lower jaw. Apparently nothing can be done about this nuisance. So even with good dental service s.--t can & does happen.
