In my youth I studied martial arts in a traditional Japanese school, with traditional martial arts training that focused on the mind, body, and soul. Decades later I was eager to continue that journey, but had nearly given up on finding the kind of school I was looking for.Martial arts instruction has changed a lot since the days of my youth. It's much more commercialized now. There are so many schools that will keep giving you belts as long as you keep giving them money, schools that focus more on their daycare than enriching the souls of their students or upholding standards. Honestly I found Kuniba Kai on a hail Mary google search, one last chance to find traditional karate before I opted to take up a different hobby altogether. I am so happy I stumbled across this dojo.Run by Mr. Estes, Kuniba Kai is as traditional as it gets with hard wood floors, and methodical, in depth instruction. Every nuance, every motion, every detail is conveyed and reinforced with deep roots in generations of martial arts history.There is not a rush to pump you through as many belts as you can get for money, at Kuniba emphasis is put on really understanding the principles at the right pace for you. In fact that is what makes Kuniba Kai so special. It's not about them, it's about you and making you the best you can be.It isn't easy. You will be pushed. You will be challenged. You will end class sore and tired and coated in sweat. And for that you will find perhaps a part of yourself that you didn't know existed; maybe the best part.
