I live in Los Angeles most of the time, but spend a lot of time in El Paso. I have been here this time around much longer than I expected to be. As a result, I really needed someone to touch up my roots and trim my hair.

Everyone around here wanted at least $85 to do my roots. That's what everyone wants in L.A., too, and it's ridiculous because it's a single color. Super easy to apply.

So I was passing this place yesterday, and thought I'd stop in and ask about their pricing. The owner, Reuben, was there, and could not have been nicer. He gave me their pricing, which was WAY more reasonable, as well as his business card.

Then, last night, I saw the reviews, and kinda freaked out. I mean... Who wants to go to a 1-star salon??

But then I thought about how warm Ruben was, and how reviews can sometimes not be reflective of reality. (For example, some of my favorite restaurants over around the 3-star mark.)

OH MY GOD! I am SOOOO happy I listened to my instinct.

I went back today, and was seen by Bertha. As it turns out, it was her first day at that salon, after working on the east side for far too long. And frankly, I couldn't have been happier.

First of all, she speaks English. (Not a huge issue for me, because my Spanish is fairly good, but I'm much more comfortable in English.)

Second of all, she really listened to what I wanted, and did exactly just that.

Third of all, she's EXTREMELY detail-oriented. I have very pale skin, so it stains easily when I get my hair dyed. I've been to expensive salons on the Westside of LA where they just slap the color on and wash it off, and I walk out with badly stained skin. No consideration or care to how I looked at all.

But not with Bertha!

I have never had anyone work so hard a rubbing out the stains. It was amazing, and so very much appreciated.

Then, after she dyed my hair, she cut it to perfection.

But honestly? The best part of my experience was HER. She is so friendly and authentic and totally got my sense of humor. (Which will earn anyone points.)

As an aside: I don't know why there are reviews complaining about the cleanliness. It was absolutely on par with every other place I've ever been. I didn't seen any issues whatsoever, and I am someone who grosses out easily.

At any rate, Bertha now has a loyal customer in me. I will only go to her when I'm in town. I am so, so happy I found her. I encourage anyone looking for a well-priced, friendly, high-quality salon to go here.“

My three year old daughter wanted bangs, she was a bit shy but EVERYONE asked for her name and talked to her and us. They allowed us to stay with her, and are very easy going people.
