    Although we were disappointed in not seeing a prairie chicken, we weren't actually surprised. We slowly drove the auto trail, and used the Merlin app to determine the birds that we were hearing. We saw bobwhites, confirmed by their song, giant jackrabbits, and a lot of other bird species that we don't normally see in Katy.
    While we didn't see anything Earth shattering, it was still very enjoyable to slowly drive and scout around.
    I would like to go back another time maybe when there's more of a likelihood of seeing an actual prairie chicken.

    This facility is about to have several entirely new buildings open up from the looks of things. It has a couple trails that meander along mowed paths through the tall prairie grass to a small lake and then along the Coushatta creek through the trees. STUPENDOUS wildflowers on the breezy spring day.

    I had a nice chat with one of the officials here before I started my walk. It's always nice to be able to talk about our wonderful outdoor adventures with someone who is so involved with It's stewardship.

    I did not catch her name, but she brightened my day and I thank her for it :)

    This is a small patch of managed coastal prairie dedicated to preserving the unique and astounding Attwater's greater prairie chicken which is a critically endangered endemic species to the Texas/Louisiana coastal prairie. Although I didn't see any prairie chickens during my visit, I watched a gorgeous sunrise and listened to the inspiring dawn songs of the prairie birds - including Eastern meadowlarks, several species of sparrows, bobwhite quail (I scared a covey of them from the short grass), and even an owl.
