I was given ABA therapy here as a young (6 year old) autistic child. They have improved a lot since then but they still aim to basically “cure” your autism—I do not know how to stop masking behaviors due to my training here. I am constantly burnt out severely from masking 24/7 and I don’t know how to make it stop. This clinics job is supposed to help with autism management, and even though they are somewhat respectful, it feels like they are trying to cure autism. First, you can’t cure autism, it is a lifelong condition. Second, they are going about it in the wrong way. Bullying and belittling someone for their comfort behaviors is wrong no matter what you are trying to achieve, and it’s certainly even worse when a patient comes to you for help, and you just mock them for something they can’t control.
Perhaps Jole is better equipped to deal with younger clients, but my executive-function training consisted of her asking whether I'd ever heard of indeed.com, and then pulling the page up on her laptop, after having first gone through the preliminaries of whether I could feed, bathe, and clean for myself. Since I could do these tasks, internet access was all that she could offer me.She read a few listings (all the way through, in their painstaking entirety), and after concluding most of them, she would say 'I'm not really sure what this job is exactly', and then she would move onto the next.
