Profits over patient care. Following great expense including multiple eye exams, office visits, frames, lenses and being told by two different OPMT optometrist that cataracts were not the issue, my vision issues continued. I finally got a second opinion and was referred to an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery. Surgery was successfully performed yesterday. My exorbitant out of pocket expense is gone, however I am notifying my insurance company of questionable practices at OPMT.
I chose OPMT because I had new vision insurance that did not cover my previous doctor. On my visit in September, I filled out all the paperwork and gave them my insurance. I explained I did not have medical insurance, as they asked for that card as well. During the paperwork I declined any out of pocket services. During my exam, I made sure to mention that I would like my PD included on my prescription, as I often order my glasses online. Dr. Patel said something along the lines of “we can’t give you that for legal reasons unless you buy glasses.” I thought this was very strange. Next, she very casually asked if she could photograph my eyes for my file, explaining that she likes to have images on file for all of her patients. I thought nothing of it and of course obliged. I then head up to the front, where I am immediately pressured to buy glasses by Cynthia. I explain that I am not interested, and that I can get them cheaper online. The lady says my insurance will cover most of the cost, and I could get a basic pair for just $22 out of pocket. I accept as this is comparable to online prices. As I pay for the glasses, I am told that my vision insurance will not cover the visit, since it is a medical visit, because I had the photographs taken of my eye. I told her that was not acceptable, and that I had signed forms declining any additional services. She said she would speak with the Dr. about removing the charge and billing the visit as a regular eye exam, which they did end up doing. A week later, I received a call that my glasses are ready to be picked up. I head up there, try them on, and big nope. They are not the correct prescription. The receptionist was very nice and explained that since they were on lunch hour, I would have to return to speak with someone after lunch. (2nd trip) Later that week, I go back and sit with Cynthia. She checks the prescription and says it is correct. She explains it is just my eyes not used to them, it is common and nothing to worry about. Try to wear them for 2 weeks and my eyes will adjust. I deal with them all day and finally that evening we sat to watch tv and I couldn’t deal with it. (3rd visit). A few weeks later in October, my significant other takes the glasses up there for a refund. We just wanted the $22 back we paid for them and to be done with the ordeal. Of course, this request was denied. They do not take returns on glasses. I will have to come back and see another doctor to have a new examination. (4th visit) I returned for the reexamination in November and the new doctor finds that my prescription is slightly off. We compared the 2 with the switchy thing that they do and the one wrote previously was noticeably blurry. She asks if I mind her checking the prescription on the new glasses. I of course oblige. She then comes back and tells me that the RX is in fact incorrect. The axis is off by 20 points on one of the lenses. She says they are going to order a new lens for the originally prescribed prescription and they should work fine. (5th visit) Two months go by without any word, I had fallen through the cracks. I received an email on my birthday with a cute message. I respond saying I would love to have my glasses I paid for nearly 6 months ago. I receive a voicemail from Cynthia saying that my glasses are ready “and have been for quite some time.” Today, I go up there and pick them up. At this point I was a bit short with the staff. I had ran out of courtesy. They asked for me to sit and wait for Cynthia and I replied that I did not need to try them on, I just wanted to pick them up and go. I gave them a quick try on to oblige the lady and left. I wore them for the ride home, about 6 blocks. (6th visit) I noticed if I closed my right eye the left lens is still visibly incorrect. It is impossible for me to tell if they replaced the lens at all from the “faulty” one since it is still faulty. I would highly recommend any other eye doctor in the Hendersonville area over this practice.
I called and made an appointment over a week ago for an eye exam, letting them know I wear CRT lenses (Ortho-K). The receptionist took my insurance information and said that the appointment would be covered. Now, on the day of the exam, they call me and inform me that they refuse to do an eye exam without also doing a fitting. The lens fitting which I already have done is a) not covered by the insurance that they checked on the day of the booking b) over $1600 out of pocket. This should have been made clear during the booking.
