NPT HealthWorks made it possible for me to run in the 2019 Boston Marathon. In particular, this is a shoutout to NHW’s Dr. Nate—Nathan Cole, my PT champ, who got me to the start line in Hopkinton, Mass., on April 15. I first walked into Newport HealthWorks last October, a marathoner in her mid-sixties in debilitating hip pain, unable to run. Marathoners run all the time. They are always thinking about the next 26.2. Every run is a training run. Running is such a big part of my life that to have to stop cold turkey, as I did, was devastating. During my first session with Dr. Nate we talked about running, and the painful fact that while I had qualified to run in my third consecutive Boston Marathon, I couldn’t see it happening. To me, he simply said, “We’ll get you there.” And they did. The problem, in layman’s terms, was a bunch of terribly scrambled hip flexor muscles. Throughout the fall I went into NHW on a regular basis. Nate and my “team” (thank you also to Dr. Liz Kilzi, and Riley Bouchard, about to get his degree from URI) helped me limber up and prescribed a program of “stretchies” and strength exercises. Nate put me on a treadmill; took videos (yikes). In early January he issued the green light for me to resume running, and my marathon training. In April I ran in Boston, and finished in time to qualify for Boston in 2020. Thank you, Dr. Nate and everyone at Newport HealthWorks. For me, this was a match made in runner’s heaven. #everyrunsatrainingrun #eatdrinkandrunmerry #boston2020
