Love this place. They do a great job. My husband will not go anywhere else. They also have a woman who is able to do ladies cuts. The prices are great. And they work with children. Real small town barber shop!

It's always nerve-wracking looking for a good local service provider in a small town--there isn't much in the way of online reviews for the four barber shops in Mount Joy. I decided to avoid the one shop that did have a single, solitary, negative review on Google (Snyder's), but as I was driving back and forth down Main Street looking for the one other shop I thought I'd seen before, I kept passing Snyder's. In frustration, I turned left on a side street to make a U-turn, and lo and behold I saw *this* little gem of a shop, Shelly's, tucker away between a couple of houses. First thing I noticed upon entering was how clean and tidy the place was. It looked very comfortable and welcoming, with plenty of room (unlike some barber shops). The shop was empty as I entered - something the owner mentioned was not usual for a Friday afternoon - and so the gentleman beckoned me to the chair right away with the words, "Let's get you comfortable and then we can talk about what you'd like." The sense I got from this barber was of small-town warmth combined with truly professional skill. We briefly talked about what length would look good on me, and he said he'd go light to start out (he could always take more off) and do it on just a part of my head so I could see the effect. I appreciated that touch - with most barbers, you tell them your best guess and they go to town, and if you don't like it, too bad. We ultimately decided to go shorter, and after he'd done a once-over of my whole head, we decided to go even a good bit shorter in celebration of warm summer weather approaching, and the resulting cut was excellent - perfectly balanced, even, and flattering of my head's shape (insofar as much as that is possible - more like hiding my head's flaws as much as possible). I very much appreciated his attention to detail and willingness to spend extra time going over my cut again to bring it exactly to my preferences. I always appreciate it when a barber skillfully wields a straight razor, and a few quick (and painless - not always the case with some barbers!) swipes and he had the bit around my ears was crisped up. But that wasn't all - I felt a bit of hot lather on the back of my neck and a few more quick swipes of the razor to get my neckline clean. I thought that was a very nice touch, and the warm lather certainly felt nice. Through it all, he (and I'm sorry, he told me his name twice but I can't remember it at the moment) kept a light but knowing touch. As well, he let me simply enjoy the experience - we talked a little about my job and his family, but he didn't push me for conversation like some barbers can. I appreciated that, as sometimes I just want to relax in the chair. And for all that PLUS a beard trim, he charged less than just a plain (mediocre) cut at Great Clips! Will definitely be back. 4.8/5 stars.
