Kao Chao at Haircut of Today is the Perfect Barber. My hair was a mess, a blob in several directions. I don't need fu-fu frills, just the type of haircut Dad and I used to get. I showed my mop to Mr. Chao, then showed him how long I wanted my hair to be, and he got right to it. He only charged me $16. Wow. Exactly what I needed. The shop is easy to miss because 82nd Avenue is extremely busy in this section. I was watching traffic in all directions, which on a busy Saturday afternoon tends to suddenly bunch up and stop in front of you. Expect to drive by the entrance here, maybe double back to get in. Haircut of Today is on the East side of 82nd. Once you're here, there...read full review
I have lived in Happy Valley for nearly 3 years now . When I was new to Hawaii I was also new to the haircut scene. I never thought about the effort it would take to find that perfect Barber shop and Barber. it took a few months of guinea piging my golden locs but, I found a good old school barber. No frills or waxing not even a wash but it was always good fast and for Oahu it was a bargain and I had made a great friend. Back to now. I was never impressed with the haircut but I am no glamorous fashion dude either and definitely not a trend setter. I tried all of the chain store salons which was a whole lot of not listening to the customer and cutting it as though it was their own hair, 2 inches off the top was to them a very boxy flattop which is fine if your the Wolverine or Peter Parker's boss. I never thought to complain about it but it was always annoying. I have been pretty successful with him for 2 years now. I have learned that employees as well as the owners of any given business that is personal in nature has to be trained by the customer to service their specific needs. Once that report is established everything else will be delivered as expected. It's an art and a skill and the artist is always in training. I say about 50 percent of the haircut is communication (that is the customers job) and the remaining 50 percent is the barber or stylists. Never be afraid to teach and never assume they know what they are doing but, most importantly don't be too hasty and give up on anyone who is eager to learn. Nothing is instant and nothing is perfect. Have high expectations but nothing unattainable! Kao is my Barber now! He is always greatful for my business!
Won't go elsewhere. And he does remember what you want repeating it when you come in. His way to confirm your same cut or any cut changes. Perfectionist. Man of little words yet KNOWS his business. And $12.00 & $8 tip is nothing & you leave with a SUPER great cut. A no frills, no drama shop manned by a simple quiet & pleasant barber.Service: Haircut
