We adopted 3 month-old Yogi from a rescue. A few months later, the very large/strong pup’s DNA showed his parents were German Shepherd & Belgian Malinois. My husband & I have had Shepherd mixes before, but Yogi the working pup was ruling our household & becoming a growing challenge! We decided a board and train was the best option—and knew we, too, had much to learn. After researching & talking with many trainers; they seemed to be either strictly positive-training focused, OR they train all dogs with an e-collar. Many use stricter “dominance” methods. Thankfully, I found Elissa! I liked her background, approach. and credible years of training. Also appreciated that Yogi would live in her home on a farm with lots of room to run. (He wouldn’t be stuck in a crate the entire time, only let out for brief training.) When we met, we trusted her immediately. Her philosophy is to get to know and work with the dog, and then determine what specific, least invasive training methods are needed. During the three weeks Yogi was with Elissa, she sent frequent photos/videos/updates. She made sure we were comfortable with the direction she was going with him, too. We knew he was well cared for, getting structure, and having fun with her dogs. Since Yogi came home, he’s been calmer, listens to us, walks well on a leash (astounding difference!) and has manners. (I say this, but he’s still his same goofy self.) He—we—learned so much! We appreciated all the time she spent going over things with us so we could seamlessly continue her training cues and approach. And it was great seeing the strong bond she created with Yogi. Whether your dog has behavioral issues, or simply needs a solid foundation, I highly recommend Elissa as a trainer!
