I had the roof redone and they told me about the mortar at the top of the chimney needed to be replaced (2 flue pipes, 1 for the fireplace & 1 for the oil burner side). I called them up at the end of November and they said they would send someone out to look at it. Was told I needed to be home. So, I took off. A few days before they gave me a 3-hour window. I told them to see if they can give me a closer window on the day of the estimate. Got a call that they are 5 minutes away. Guy gets out I tell him that I would like to get it repaired before it gets too cold out. He didn't even bother to take out a ladder, go on the roof, or look inside at the flue pipe. I called several Chimney Cleaning companies and Tony was BY FAR the most well versed and fairly priced. Many other companies wanted to come in 2-3 weeks and Tony came with several days. Tony and his workers did an inspection and said we did not need a cleaning. I never owned a wood burning fireplace before and he also explained how to make a perfect/safe fire. He didn't even charge me!! I offered a tip for the guys but he said NO. It's VERY rare in 2021 in the world we live in to have someone share his wisdom and not rip someone off that actually didn't need services. It goes to show we still have good people in this world! I contacted Chief Chimney Services a couple of months ago. I had my chimney cleaned and dryer vent cleaned as well. I did like how professional they were (from when I first called, to confirming the appointment and also while at my home.) They seemed like a nice personable couple. At the end of the service when I was getting ready to pay, he said there was a problem with my chimney and showed me pictures of work that needed to be done. He said I needed a sleeve for my oIl burner chimney. He showed me the pictures he took and said he would email me an estimate. He said I "might" be able to make it thru the season but that the work should be done soon. I settled the bill and a few days later received the estimate for over $2000. I wanted to get another estimate, but time got away from me. About 5 weeks later I lost heat and found out that I needed a new oil burner. (Verified by 2 companies and a friend of the family.) I priced out a new burner (3 quotes) and 2 I ended up having to my house. I figured I would repair the chimney at the same time. BOTH companies that came to my house looked at the chimney and said there was NO DAMAGE. One took video (while I was watching) showing me the chimney and it looked fine. It didn't look anything like the pictures Chief Chimney showed me. Both companies told me this is a SCAM that a lot of chImney companies do. Where they show you pictures of someone else's chimney and since you aren't going to the roof to check you don't even know. I called Chief Chimney and asked for a copy of the pictures the wife answered and told me her husband was out of town and he would call me back. I never got a return call. I felt so stupid. I am glad I didn't fall for the SCAM but wanted to share my experience. Don't be taken by this company.
