I have practiced here since 2008, having started aikido elsewhere. This is a great place to train in traditional aikido (US Aikido Federation affiliated) in a relaxed setting. Sensei Jesberger is a highly skilled 6th dan who comes from Syracuse to teach our small group. He is a patient teacher and gives new students lots of one-on-one instruction. We have had students of all backgrounds and body types, from age 16 to 70. Practice is modified to individual needs and abilities. Aikido is a beautiful and effective martial art practiced in a cooperative manner. If you want to spar, yell, compete in tournaments, or get a black belt quickly, aikido is probably not for you.
I have been a member at Aikido of Mohawk Valley since 2007. It is a small friendly dojo. The owner/instructor Stephen Jesberger holds the rank of 6th dan and the teaching rank of shidoin from the United States Aikido Federation. There are no children's classes, adult classes only. Teens with sufficient maturity level may be allowed to join. Classes are informal by the standards of traditional Japanese martial arts. There is a relaxed atmosphere in which laughter is often heard, as well as the thud of bodies hitting the mat! Jesberger Sensei comes from Syracuse three days a week to teach classes. There is a relaxed atmosphere in which laughter is often heard, as well as the thud of bodies hitting the mat! Jesberger Sensei comes from Syracuse three days a week to teach classes. We are very lucky to have such an experienced and talented teacher to come to the Mohawk Valley to teach this beautiful martial art. Currently there are classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until the last student leaves. Students arrive and depart as their schedules allow in this informal class setting. And there is a class on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. Students can pay by the month or by the individual class whichever is more suited to how often they are able to practice. There are no long-term contracts. Teaching Aikido is a labor of love for Sensei.
