UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center

Let me say up front that I know very well what a nationally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center is. This one is OK. The staff and faculty are very good, very professional, skilled and caring. The "comprehensive" part and the idea of a "team" was a bit lacking for me.No one was sure if radiation would impact another condition and treatment I had and getting a conversation going across disciplines turned out to be my job. I probably should have had a colonoscopy, nearly due when I entered treatment, BEFORE 28 radiation sessions. Who knew? I had a great experience interacting and getting care with the staff at UNM care for a few outpatient operations/procedures this year. It is to note that even though the center is called Cancer Center, there are other non-oncology related specialists who work here as well (so if you got referred to some specialists at this place like I did, don't think it's all about cancer. Some specialists do work specialized in cancer as well as other things). I've not spent a great deal of time at the Center thus far before now relocating to Albuquerque. When evaluating the city as a possible place to live and UNM also as a place for exceptional medicine and other care I need, I just had the probably the best initial encounter with the Cancer Center that I could have. Although we were on the road far from my treatment in New England, I believed it was time for an exam and possible followup treatment. I was matched with Neda Hashemi MD.
