Dr Gilbert is an EXCELLENT surgeon and I've learned that involves much more than being able to actually do the Total Knee Replacement surgery well. Dr. Gilbert considered me as a whole person and asked life-saving questions. And, He looked at me when he asked questions! He asked me about metal allergies. (I HAVE THAT!) and he asked about stomach irritation from NSAIDS. (I HAVE THAT, too!) He offered good alternatives and used them instead. Before seeing Dr. Gilbert, I had canceled surgery with the local "best knee guy" when his surgical team actually laughed when I asked about my nickel allergy. They said "In 20 years, I've never heard of it!" They also said "don't worry" when I questioned their choice of low-dose aspirin for blood thinner and Mobic for pain. They said Mobic was gentler on the stomach than ibuprofen, which is blatantly FALSE and could have had life-threatening consequences! Seriously, Have you EVER heard of someone stopping worrying when someone flippantly says, "Don't worry?" That local doc has a great reputation, but his team was condescending, dismissive, and dangerous for me. In contrast, I was thrilled and relieved to find a surgeon I trust completely. (I'm forever grateful to the friend who referred me after she had a similar nightmare, locally.) Dr. Gilbert keeps his knee replacement patients overnight and that makes a big positive difference. It's not more expensive, using Medicare, either, since it's 25 hours and considered "same day" He makes sure your pain is controlled and you are tolerating your rxs before you head home. Im now scheduled to have my other knee done and I'm thrilled to NOT be worried about finding a great surgeon. Dr. Gilbert is EXCELLENT!

My Husband has had both hip replacement surgeries performed by Dr. Brett Gilbert. From the very first day we consulted with Dr. Gilbert, he was very kind and explained what was going to be done during the surgery. He answered all of our questions (We had many) and made us feel at ease in his care. My husband had his last surgery in June and within a few short months he was back to his normal activities. He was, and is now, a very active exerciser. My entire experience from the first meeting through replacing my severely damaged right hip to my final follow up went almost as well as we could have dreamt! The entire team at Emerge Ortho were great as well as the entire team at The Specialty Hospital in Durham. Dr. Gilbert is a pleasure to work with- he takes time with you, doesn't rush, and makes sure you are comfortable with every step of the process. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but if you need to have a hip replaced please contact Dr. Gilbert! Thank You All!!!
