I have already followed Esther Johnson from Raleigh to Durham. It’s worth the drive if you are a curly girl!!! She is a magician with curly hair whether you are black, white, or any color in between. She will figure out the best way to make your curls work for you. She will also help you understand how to work with your own curls. I always learn something new during my appointment. A lot of hairdressers say that they are great with curls, but Esther truly is. I now have happy bouncy defined curls. Yay!

I’ve had a couple of great cuts from Hysteria now. I feel comfortable, welcomed, and right at home as a queer and trans person. Im very grateful for the limited free and reduced slots they give for gender affirming haircuts.

To all the anxious, over thinkers -- this salon lives up to the name in every way. You can book online. The people are great and the environment is great.I can't recommend Esther more! She instantly made me feel comfortable and really listened to what I wanted. If you're a person that considers your hair "unruly" or "difficult" or "damaged" like me -- it can feel intimidating to see a professional. However, there is just an ease that comes from sitting in Esther's chair where you just feel like she gets it. There is no wonky layering she can't fix. No split end she can't help salvage. Safe Space Salon is an LGBTQ+ salon. Our doors are open to all, but we primarily specialize in creating a welcoming environment for the queer community. Our stylists specialize in gender affirming cuts, vivid and creative color, and avante garde haircuts. All genders, ages, and races are welcome here, as our stylists are equipped with the hair knowledge and finesse to handle any texture or temperament. Our salon dog Cassie will keep you company as you peruse the gallery of local visual artists. All artwork is sold with proceeds going directly to the artist, Safe Space does not take a cut, but we do match a percentage of art sales and donate to charity every quarter!
