My name is Shelita Rowe Anderson and my baby son is buried here. He was stillborn and we decided to have a funeral for him. The Kings were amazing people and directed his funeral as though he were an adult and lived a full life! Sleep peacefully ?️ Dwayne Anderson
Oaklawn initiated as a private cemetery by the Hendrix family around 1915 , the first burial here took place in 1916. It was then taken over by the City of Charlotte in 1956. The onsite mausoleum is still privately owned and operated by the Oaklawn Mausoleum Association. The building is locked and there is no one on site to provide access. The cemetery is in the park-like design that initiated in Europe with Père Lachaise in Paris yelp.com/biz/cimetière-d… and Kensal Green in London yelp.com/biz/kensal-gree…. In the United States, you'll find this at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts yelp.com/biz/mount-aubur….The entrance avenue is a long boulevard with burial plots on both sides but manicured grass. The further back sections of the cemetery are open and sweeping with rolling hills and large old-growth trees. Shady in some spots and sunny in others,It is an active cemetery with many recent interments and current grave decorations. The roadways are smooth and easy to drive.[Review 15388 overall, 890 of 2021, number 2938 in North Carolina.]
Wonderful cemetery. Normally I prefer cemeteries and graveyards with more history, but the scenery here made it very worth it. I’m a fan of the mausoleum — you can’t get in on your own; you have to call the Oaklawn Mausoleum Association so they can let you in. There are a great number of photography opportunities here. I spent around four hours here in complete peace.
