This was my first time visiting and came along with my niece, she and I ordered the smothered pork chops i also had spaghetti and dressing with mine..she had the pork chops ,cabbage and sweet potatoes ..the food was ok ..but a few hours later my niece contacted me and asked me how i was feeling i said ok, but she said she had been to the restroom 3times after eating her meal i told her i was fine..lord and behold i got woke up in the middle of the night with a tore up stomach i almost didn't make it to the restroom..since we both ate the porkchops we're assuming that's what made us sick.probably wasn't prepared properly..i will not be returning and my niece says the same.
Had the chance of dining with this establishment a few weeks ago. I got there not long after they opened. The owner seemed to be not so inviting yet not overly happy to see me and the person I was with. Either way I placed an order for the catfish plate whIch came with 2 sides. Wasn't much to choose from yet I chose yams & mac n chz. The fried catfish was tasty & seasoned well yet the 2 sides weren't so great. I expected the Mac n chz to be much better yet it tasted a little sour.
Thank you Yelpers for another fantastic gem. In Memphis visiting our daughter. Did the Graceland thing this morning and looked for something in Northern Mississippi for lunch and came across Melanie's. Just a simple little place kinda off the beaten track. For simple good food you can't beat places like this. Couldn't decide between the smothered pork chops or the hamburger steak (Friday special). Our sweet waitress recommended the hamburger steak and mashed potatoes. I added the coleslaw and cornbread. Yes, it was just two pieces of ground beef but cooked up in a skillet with some amazing Southern gravy. Something this California boy would hope for in a true southern meal! Daughter and wife both had catfish - light and full of flavor. Also had to try some wings. Great wings. Got the mild ones but they had a pretty good kick - wonder what the hot and suicide ones would be like!! Great little spot for some true down home cooking!
