I’ve only attended one class so far but the instructor is a karate competition legend and a cool guy. Knows his stuff and helpful. Class is a good workout. Pretty relaxed class but still a good learning environment. No negative pressure to push beyond your current physical limits which is great. I think a little more positive encouragement to improve your limits in the exercises might be helpful but like I said only one class so far so I don’t know what it’s always like but that’s way better than overly aggressive encouragement to go beyond your capabilities that ends up discouraging you. I trained here off and on for 20 years, 14 hours a week since the age of 5. As a shy kid, this dojo taught me confidence, bravery, and to be ambitious. I proudly competed in all my tournaments under the name "Katzer's Bushidokan" in kata and kumite (sparring). This dojo taught me self defense against weapons of guns, knives, batons, bats, being attacked from behind, on the ground, and from straight on. Believing I was tough enough to fight at such a young age, my sensei allowed me to spar with the adults as a kid, as he would for anyone. Are you looking for a Karate School? The 1st thing you need to ask is, "Are you looking for a school that hands out participation awards with belt ranking systems based on a schedule and your pocket book, OR are you looking for TRUE life skills that will last a life time?" If you are looking for the real deal, this is it. My boys and their Dad have studied under Mr. Katzer. Earning Rank is not over night, it is slow and you have to earn it by putting in time and practice to develop your skills. You learn more here then just how to defend yourself, you learn respect.
