When I first entered Day Institute in Lake St. Louis, I could barely walk by myself. I had just left SSM Hospital after almost three weeks in a hospital bed caused by a nasty fall I had wherein I broke my right humerus. The fall and those weeks in the hospital bed robbed me of strength, balance, and coordination. I was very discouraged and didn’t think I would ever be back to my original self again. I am 84 years old and in generally good health and I worried that my age would prevent me from responding to treatment. I was mad at the world and probably showed it with some of my encounters with the staff. No matter what my mood was, I was always treated with skill, compassion, and respect. The therapists were always encouraging me and telling me how I was improving but I didn’t believe it until I saw it myself. I began to feel stronger, and I began to notice the extreme care with which they treated me and the other patients. I could see that there was genuine feeling in their work with all of us. This is the finest group of therapists I have ever had experience with. They all get along with each other and work closely with each other to assure that no one misses planned treatment. They are all skillful in what they are doing and obviously know the methods to apply their skills to get the best results. Yesterday I finished my last day of therapy, and I said a sad goodbye to the staff who had brought me back to life again and to whom I will always be grateful.
