“Estate taxes can be complex, confusing, and frustrating for those already grieving the loss of a loved one. After calling many tax professionals in the Portland area about my estate tax questions, several stated they did not provide estate tax services or wanted to charge me thousands of dollars upfront without even hearing the amount of income my estate generated (which is partly related to the complexity of the tax return). Luckily, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with Cross Associates (Rachel Shufelt) who was eager to arrange an in-person consult to better understand my estate tax needs. Rachel sat down with me for about 30 minutes as we discussed the paperwork and my assumptions. She disproved several statements I received from other tax preparers and assured me the process moving forward would be easy (for me) due to good record keeping. And it was. Copies of my documents were provided to her at the consult, a few more were mailed directly, and the return was completed well before the tax deadline. The fees for her services were totally reasonable (a fraction of other preparer quotes). But, more importantly, she was responsive, kind, sympathetic, and a genuinely honest and transparent professional. I *highly* recommend her as a tax preparer.
