261 South St, Portsmouth“Rolling in along the moan strat of Portsmouth’s South End, the ride is gentle, avoiding the bustle of Market Square. Wild Valentine appears as a bloom itself. A few umbrella’d tables out front invite a pause, though the name gives no hint of what lies within.
Alas, no true welcome for the vélo. One must lean a quality machine against the side wall, hidden from view — a compromise unworthy of a rider’s trust. Bathrooms, however, are spacious and clean, and service is swift enough. No apparent self-service water, one must ask.
Inside: bright, Scandinavian restraint, perfumed with flowers. Minimalist, curious, undeniably pretty. Morning calm hums gently, but no other cyclists linger — they pass by, leaving the space to locals and flower-buyers.
Here lies the café’s strength: La Mulita roasts from nearby Rye, poured with respect. Café served in a ceramic, not paper. Iced coffee with coffee ice cubes — a thoughtful panache that reveals a true devotion to flavour. Among the best in the area.
Sparse carb offerings. Two pastries on the day, neither tempting for the miles ahead. This is no pâtisserie of destiny, but a side note, almost ornamental.
Wild Valentine is a jewel of the neighborhood, a place to stroll and sip, to admire fleurs with one’s lover. For the cyclist, however, it is more detour than destination. A café of elegance, yes, but not of the road.
