A horror story with a very happy ending Thursday January 23rd: My twenty-eight year old Carrier furnace died and the house dropped from 68 deg. to 48 deg. in a few hours. Not a good thing when Delaware is in the middle of a cold snap. I ran out like many and picked up a few electric heaters and made an emergency call to a local HVAC company Coastal Comfort around 8pm informing them I had no heat. I was assured from the service representative that a tech would be assigned. Friday January 24th: The following morning I didn't receive a confirmation or call back on when a tech will arrive. So I called Coastal Comfort again around 11am to check on the status and was informed that they had no record of my previous call. Ok - red flag, but I assumed the error was due to they are probably swamped with emergency calls. Coastal Comfort was quick to apologize and they had a tech come out later that day. The tech did his thing and stated the problem was the gas valve. The tech then contacted his office to see if they had the part and was informed by his boss that Carrier no longer makes a replacement gas valve for my unit. He suggested a new furnace due to it could cost $600 for the valve and a $1,000 if they had to source and install the part. I paid the $89 service fee and the tech said he would have a Coastal Comfort sales rep contact me on my option to purchase a new furnace. Coastal Comfort sales rep showed up and did his thing and we discussed my options. The Coastal Comfort sales rep said choices are slim pickings and I may not get what I want due to limited availability of units and he would get back to me with a proposal. Slim pickings! Do I really want to spend thousands on what they had sitting around. I was kind of stuck for options. I'm definitely going to need another opinion. Then I remembered I had an American Home Shield contract that came with the house. So I immediately went online, paid the $125 service fee and placed a no heat service request. American Home Shield dispatch my request to Chesapeake Comfort Systems. Saturday January 25th: I received a call from Chesapeake Comfort Systems asking if I was available today and around 11:00 am a Chesapeake Comfort Systems tech was at my door. Tech Christian, did his thing and as stated with the previous tech from Coastal Comfort the problem was a faulty gas valve. Now even though the final diagnosis was the same, there was a huge difference to my previous experience and ultimately the outcome. I watched as Chesapeake Comfort Systems tech worked methodically and explained everything in great detail as he was troubleshooting and testing each component and explained all the inner workings of my furnace. I felt like a student in a HVAC class. Christian confirmed that it was a faulty gas valve. Oh crap! He finished by stating we will order the part and make it right, I will receive a call when the part comes in. WTF! Coastal Comfort said there was no replacement. Sunday January 26th: To my surprise I received a text from Wes at Chesapeake Comfort Systems stating we have the gas valve and if I am available Monday for the install. Wow! that was fast. Monday January 27th: Christian arrives and goes to work. Again watching Christian do his thing with his attention to detail was very satisfying. One hour later my furnace is up and running. I can't say enough about how satisfied I am with American Home Shield for selecting Chesapeake Comfort Systems for my repair order and especially to Chesapeake Comfort Systems for assigning Christian to my home. Thank You from a grateful warm and comfy customer. Joe
