My husband discovered Sibal’s salon several months ago, after our longtime Newbury Street stylist retired. The salon is co-owned by Silvio and Alba. Silvio has been doing a wonderful job cutting my husband’s hair. I, however, hadn’t been to a salon in well over a year, and hadn’t had a full color service in more than two years, partly because I had no idea how to find a new stylist I would be as happy with as I was with our previous stylist, especially in the midst of the pandemic, and partly because I had no idea what I wanted to do in terms of a new style and color, both of which were long overdue. At my husband’s most recent hair appointment with Silvio, he explained my concerns, and Alba offered to make time to do a consultation with me the same day. My hair had been thinning considerably over the past 15 years, following trauma from a difficult major surgery. In addition, after having my very long hair colored for 40 years, the cumulative damage to the cuticle from color processing and heat styling had left the majority of the length brittle and frizzy. In addition, two plus years’ worth of oxidation had turned my previously blonde-foiled brown hair an extremely unattractive shade of orange, as you can see in my “before” photo. At age 67, my hair was also much grayer and had turned white at my temples. I shared my ambivalence with Alba about whether to let my natural color continue to grow out or return to lightening the base and adding subtle blonde streaks, as I had been doing pre-COVID. I thought blonde looked a bit more youthful on me, but I also wanted to minimize damage to the considerable amount of healthier virgin hair at the crown. I also knew that I wanted to go significantly shorter (my hair was just a few inches shy of my waistline) and lop off a lot of the damaged length. I understood that the dramatic difference in color between my new growth and the majority of the length (old, oxidized/orange and damaged) would make it a significant challenge to get rid of the orange and tone that lower portion to an ashier shade that would blend well with my natural color, without further damaging the thin, fragile strands. Luckily for me, Alba decided she was up for the challenge. We agreed that if possible, adding a bit of blonde color to my white temples and selectively on the crown without trying to hide my gray and white strands would flatter my complexion more than leaving the crown color “au naturel” and also would make a better transition to the lightened and cooled-down orange portion. Today, Alba spent four hours completely transforming my hair! As you can see in the “after” photo, she took on a difficult challenge and did an amazing job. I couldn’t be more pleased or more grateful to her and the rest of the staff at Sibal’s salon. My husband and I highly recommend Sibal’s to men and women for both styling and color.
