I train at the Tohoku Judo Club and could not be more pleased. The pricing is more than fair and the amount of training one can receive is amazing. You can train 5x a week, 2hours a day if your body is up for it. I have trained in different martial arts before but fell in love with JUDO. The Sensei's are amazing and EXTREMELY talented in training the students. A different Sensei runs the class every night which allows for an excellent extensive varying training style. I LOVE THE TOHOKU JUDO FAMILY!
Tohoku Judo is my favorite judo dojo (along with Portland Judo)! Judo is a great workout and a way to learn life skills like falling down without hurting yourself, which is key for a klutz like me. The membership is very diverse in the adult and children's classes, and like you might expect based on that, there is a welcoming, community-minded atmosphere. The instructors encourage and support competition in local tournaments, but it's about more about judo than about winning.
Warning: This place is so freakin' awesome that I could go on and on about all of the positive aspects of the dojo. Thus, my review will be limited due to not writing a Tolstoy-length review. As I said in my review about the judo dojo in Newton Centre, a good barometer for me when checking out martial arts places is how the instructors work with children and how they relate to the lower belts. Well, this place is amazing. There are a lot of children playing judo - which is great because there are so many benefits of judo: great exercise, teaches how to fall, discipline, etc. Anyway, to get to the skinny, there are different lead instructors on different nights, which is fantastic. Different instructors shape the classes a little differently, which helps with what you might like to focus on. Saying that, every night we practice throws, mat/ground work, etc...so although different, very much the same. Also, all of the people, from lower to upper belts, are super helpful and encouraging. I don't sense any macho man/woman egos. The place is very warm and friendly, and you get a killer workout. Also, I like the down-to-basics feeling of the place. I am not a big fan of glorified martial arts studios. I just like a place that has the mats, changing rooms and great people to be around - I don't need the frills and such. This place (which just moved to Mass Ave, over by Frank's Steakhouse) has a great feel and that is due to the people - simply amazing. And, you cannot beat the price. You can go five times a week and I think it is around $60 for adults and $45 for children. So, if you are interesting in learning/playing judo, this is the place to go. I am sure the other judo dojos are amazing as well. However, for me, until I return to the west coast, this is where I am going for martial arts, specifically for judo.
