OMG Best dentist I ever had!!! He is so caring and great with children. My daughter Jennifer loved going to the dentist after he took over the practice from Dr. Reed. My dad and I went there for years. So sad he is going into retirement. A GREAT DENTIST.
Dr. Dale Schmid was recommended to me by a neighbor when I moved to Lake Summerset, IL 22 years ago, in 1997. I have always enjoyed my office visits with Dr. Schmid and his long-term friendly staff, including his wife, Sandi. My boys (now grown and both moved out of state) received excellent care from Dr Schmid and his staff while growing up here. I haven't had a lot of work done over the years. I go twice a year and have cracked the odd tooth, had an old crown replaced, a new crown put on, and have had a few cavities filled. The one time my pain finally necessitated a root canal, Dr Schmid referred me to an oral surgeon. I am self-pay and have always felt the charges are very reasonable and affordable. I'm writing this review for two reasons: 1. I just read an article about unscrupulous dentists who perform unnecessary work and overcharge the insurance coverage. And 2: After seeing Dr. Schmid since 2002, my partner spent two years living in Des Moines from 2015-2017 for a temporary family-related relocation. While there, her new dentist, who she met when he visited the landscape company where she was employed, offered her "free" dental care in exchange (barter) for her landscaping experience. Well, surprise --she suddenly needed two crowns that Dr Schmid had never recommended during her semi-annual routine checkups with him. She's back in IL now and with Dr. Schmid again, and I respect him and his integrity all the more after her experience with the (in my opinion) unscrupulous Des Moines dentist. The article I read says because of better dental practices and oral hygiene products, dentists will often recommended unnecessary procedures to bring in more money, and fraudulent insurance billing is not easily caught. The article follows the revelations one new dentist discovered after taking over the successful practice of a retiring dentist, and found that the practice, under his new ownership, was making only 10 to 25% of the previous owners reported earnings each month. In my 22yrs of being Dr. Schmid's patient, I trust his practice completely. He is updated with the latest technologies and procedures and monitors troubled spots closely, but has never pushed or recommended any unnecessary procedures. I go twice yearly and get an x-ray every other visit. (The article says with good self-care, 12-16 month intervals are okay, but personally I am always amazed how much cleaner my teeth are after a thorough cleaning by a professional hygienist, despite my conscientious care.) As my teeth (and okay, body) have aged, my regimen now includes using a topical paste to build healthy enamel, and I often chew gum with Xylitol after eating out to lessen the bacteria buildup that causes plaque to form. Dr. Schmid is all about prevention and education. And very patient with my questions, I might add! His office has headphones and a selection of music that I've enjoyed when having work done, and I always opt for the numbing localized shots. Their location on the 6th floor in the bank building in downtown Freeport offers outstanding views from the dental chairs, too! Oh -- after my hip replacement, I was required to take a preventative medication before any procedures (my Dad's TX dentist did this, too. Dad died in 2016.), *but* Sandi called after my father's passing (I remember because I wished I could tell him about this) to tell me the new guidelines say this medication is no longer necessary. That's what I mean by their practice keeping up with the latest dental information. Out of curiosity, I googled reviews for Dr. Schmid and all are 5 star. The Des Moines dentist: a lot of 1 and 3 stars mixed in with some 5 stars. Thanks, Dr. Schmid, to you and your crew for all of your outstanding, professional, and immensely caring dental office! Note: The article I am referring to is p.s. get there early... they always have the latest People magazines!
Highly recommend! Super friendly and welcoming! I've been putting off going to the dentist for a little too long now due to a bad experience with my dentist growing up. Dale, his wife and staff put me right at ease making me feel so much better and less terrified of going to get my checkups in a timely manner! If you're in the market for a new dentist- go here!!
