“I remember in the early 1960s my father took his pants here every week...parked out front and sent me and my brother in....they gave free lollipops... don't know if they do anymore....but a few years later my dad switched to the old Norge Village that used to be in Almar Plaza...no lollipops. There used to be a Gulf Oil station next to Charm Cleaners. I remember they had a big handwritten sign out front that said "white gas." Must have been there till at least 1965, because I could not read before then. I thought it meant that their gas was white. Did not realize till years later that it meant that they did not serve "coloreds". But Magnusson's Standard across the street did not discriminate. I think South Holland was still a "sundown town" back then.“
