We have been going to USA Martial Arts for a little over a year, and it is already a second home to me and my family, and the people have become like family. Sometimes, trying new things can be embarrassing at first, but the comfortable and encouraging atmosphere makes all the difference. I've noticed so many positive changes in my kids and myself. My youngest daughter's issues with focusing have improved, and so have mine, along with my memory and overall mental health. My oldest daughter is more confident, as am I. My nephew has been making it to school every day and is learning self-control. I'm finally learning self-discipline, and I'm happier than I've been in a long time. The family class is so much fun now that more parents have joined. The sparring class is the highlight of my week. Master Von Patten and Mr. Damitz are incredible teachers who collaborate with other schools to offer as much as possible for us. USA Martial Arts is a great school!
I started training at this school in 2012 after watching my son begin his training there. This school has a very different philosophy than most. It balances the Martial Arts with the Mental Arts teaching students not only how to defend themselves, but also valuable life lessons focused on discipline and personal development. Another incredibly unique aspect of the school is Master Van Patten's openness to bring other instructors into his school. He has a very wide network of outstanding and well known Martial Artists that he brings into his school for seminars. Unlike most Masters I have met, Master VP's dedication to his students and his humility enables him to encourage his students to train with other leaders from around the country such as Kyoshi Kovar, Master Nottingham, Master Lechtenberg and U.S. Olympic Coach Grand Master Na. My experiences and training at USA MA are head and shoulders above all other schools I've trained at before. In a good Martial Arts you will find your fellow students and the instructors become your second family. The student body at USA MA is a fantastic group of adults and children serious about training, but who don't take themselves seriously. It is great to hear students encouraging and coaching each other when learning new skills or pushing beyond their comfort zones. I highly recommend this school and its Martial Arts family!
As a person who has been in karate for almost 10 years and has been teaching for 3, I wouldnt recomend this school. The instructers do not teach the technical names for the moves which can make new- comers quite confused with names such as in-out block. The students are almost always encouraged to make the sound 'suh' on every block or move which comes to me as unatural, instead of making a natural grunt sound in the moment of great intensity. There seems to be many black belts given to young and non-deserving kids and in my time of teaching I have faced many who have said they were a black belt and came from gangi but they compare to our schools orange belt...
