My wife and I have been tax clients of RSM Des Moines for almost 17 years. Ten days ago I received an email saying I was no longer connected to the Tax Caddy system, the system for uploading tax information and for them to share tax returns. Given that tax season is coming up soon, I emailed the tax accountant who has prepared our returns for the past few years to find out what was going on. The email bounced back. We are in Australia now and RSM is in Des Moines Iowa, there’s a pretty narrow window in which to make phone calls. So, at midnight my time, 8am Des Moines, I called the phone number for the tax accountant and found it was not someone else’s extension. There was one other lady who had worked on our returns, so I called that number as well; same result. I then called the main number and asked for the tax accountant and was told she had left the firm. I had this pretty well figured out by now but still a bit surprised that I wasn’t notified. I asked the receptionist for the name of the Tax Partner who was in charge of the previous tax accountant and she told me. I asked to be out through and got voice mail. I left my SSN, name and email. Explaining in was in Australia so email would be best for communication.\\n\\nI did not get receive any response. So next day I tried again, got voice mail and still no response. This time I left a phone number and kept my phone on all night in case of a call. Nothing. This continued 3 more times for a total of 5 over the next few days. Each time I’m getting a little upset. To0day was the final straw. We had a small credit on our account from overpayment of a previous invoice. Long story. After discussions with 2 different clerks I was able to convince them to keep the credit on our account to offset against the next years invoice. Well, today I found that a check for the credit balance had been mailed to our old address in the US. I know for a fact that there was a note on file saying “please don’t refund” because I have it in writing that it was there.\\n\\nThat’s strike 3. I can only assume after 1. Not returning 5 of my voice mail messages 2. Disconnecting me from Tax Caddy and 3. Refunding the balance after specifically agreeing not to, that we are no longer clients. Would have been nice to know after almost 17 years.\\n\\nI went back and reviewed the RSM web site and counted how many times the work “Professional” is mentioned. That word is the least likely word I would use to describe them.\\n\\nMy last call, this morning, again to voice mail of course, was to express my final frustration and say that I was writing a review. Well, here it is.\\n\\nWell this is interesting. I see the 5 star review below. I'm sure it's coincidence but a person with that name is/was a tax associate at RSM. Google the name and check the first thing that comes up. Amazing coincidence. I hope if he is an employee he changes the review to say so, or deletes it.
