About Parrots in Paradise
Parrots in Paradise is a parrot sanctuary in Kona offering visitors a unique experience. The sanctuary is home to over 150 parrots of various species, including small Lovebirds and the rare and beautiful Hyacinth Macaw. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, such as Jerry, who share fascinating facts about the birds, their individual histories, and personalities. Visitors can enjoy hands-on interactions with the birds, including having parrots climb on their shoulders or land on their arms for treats. The sanctuary emphasizes the complex lives of parrots, going beyond what is often portrayed in media. Guests have described their experiences as some of the best they've had in Hawaii and highly recommend a visit. The family that owns and runs the sanctuary is dedicated to educating the public about keeping parrots as pets, and it is clear that all of the birds are extremely happy and well taken care of. The beautiful views of the sea and the landscape make the experience even more special, but it is noted that the road leading to the sanctuary is narrow and may have small branches brushing against vehicles.
I had the pleasure of visiting Parrots in Paradise this week with my parents, and it was truly a special experience.
The sanctuary itself is set on a stunning ten-acre property with sweeping ocean views—peaceful, beautiful, and clearly a place created with care and intention. Gerald and his mom, Dorothy, run the sanctuary, and you can feel their heart in everything they do.
Gerald led our guided tour and completely impressed us. His knowledge is extensive, but what stood out even more was his deep, personal connection to each of the 100+ parrots in his care. He shared the unique stories behind many of the birds and helped us understand just how emotionally...read full review
If you’re anywhere near Kona, do not miss the Parrot Sanctuary — it’s hands-down one of the most heartwarming and unexpectedly magical experiences on the Big Island.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted not only by the vibrant colors and calls of hundreds of parrots but also by the deep sense of love and care that fills this place. The sanctuary is home to rescued parrots from all over, many of whom have found a forever home here after being neglected, abandoned, or outliving their original owners. It’s not just a visit — it’s a story of second chances.
The staff and volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. They know each...read full review
My wife and I took the tour and saw about 100 different birds over a few hours. There were a few opportunities to handle/interact with the birds and it was interesting hearing some of their histories. I would personally have liked to learn a bit more about bird biology than the individual backgrounds of most birds, but I understand the main focus is a rescue, not a petting zoo.
