The aroma of Mandarin Orange fills the room as the sweet sultry flavor of quality and respect lures you in to position yourself on couches that exudes comfort. The sound of clippers purling away like an awaken kitten taking its first steps into a imaginative world or in this case a forgiving barber shop where all is welcome and accepted. To compare this particular shop to anything else; is to say that the young and the mature black folk are treated fairly in this unforgiving world. The statement is simply not justifiable and could never compare to the foundation that was built on the back of a legendary rooted and grounded history. Whether your roots are twisted, curled, free, or locked like L the Barber, you become part of the evolution that was founded from the deep soles that sprinkle a gift of inspiration with each clip and each pic. One could only think that the illustrious couches could bring you too much comfort to where you potentially fall asleep. However, the roar of the (L)ion’s words keeps you from ever getting sleepy. It’s the way the artist himself illustrate his words to paint a vivid picture of either the change that is decreasing in the world or the spark of change one could find in him or herself. Whichever way the conversation goes, it is one to be had within the youth. Having my brother sit upon L’s chair was a tunnel vision to see through. Once I stopped looking at my phone and looked at him sitting in the chair, I saw something I’ve been waiting to see in a young black male for the longest. Whenever L spoke, my brother looked up. It wasn’t the tone that my brother felt from L’s presence that allowed him to pay attention. No, it was the respect that L gave to a 13 year old young male. So many times we are expecting the youth to respect and be alert when someone is speaking to them. Though, it is when we stop speaking to them and as L says, speak with them, that they see that they too are as important. As L likes to envision it, they are the light, the visionaries, and the future. How we treat the young is how they treat the old. The young mirrors everything they see and hear, so who is really moving who. No matter the talent that L presents to his clients, (and believe me his talent is nothing to question) he puts the attention to making sure that his clients and visitors are comfortable, enlightened, and ready to inspire the next.
