Responding to the commercials on TV for a $99 job I called Sears to clean out the ducts in our newly purchased home, which had just been gut-renovated, so I knew there would be lots of dust in the vents. They arrived on time and appeared to do a decent job on cleaning out the ducts. Unfortunately I let them talk me into replacing the UV light on the system, which looked old and was hanging at an angle. When they were done and turned the system back on, it started to freeze up, so we turned it off and let the ice thaw. They could not get it re-started. They called their boss, who told me he would have an HVAC company come out ASAP to fix the problem. That was the next day, and it took several hours for them to diagnose and fix the problem. The HVAC guy told me that he gets a lot of business this way, cleaning up after the Sears crew. Sears did pay for the HVAC, so all it cost me was a day, but I really needed that day to do other things. And now 8 months later the UV light they installed is hanging loose. Bottom line: let them clean your vents, but don't let them near your AC system. They are NOT HVAC pros.

Does Sears even exist anymore? My elderly mother likes to think she's independent but is constantly getting scammed by shiftless criminals who prey on old people by using the brand names they trust and remember from the 70's. This is one such scam. These scumbags came to her house saying they'd clean the air ducts for $99 and 2 hours later they presented her with a bill for over two thousand dollars--and the vents haven't been cleaned in even a cursory manner. They didnt even try to make it seem like work had been done. The number they list for you to call and explain the fraudulent charges is manned by officious Jamaicans trying to hide their accents. This must be a training ground for when they start scamming these same old people out of their homes and social security checks--no doubt the "technicians" are just there to case the place for valuables. As usual, there is nowhere to turn to when old people get scammed. The "Better Business Bureau"--another name from the past that you were supposed to trust-- just tells me to call the federal trade commission, which is an answering machine that will never get back to you. Do yourself a favor and check out YouTube videos on how to clean vents yourself--or go check out companies that don't pretend to be affiliated with defunct pre-internet institutions. Also--change your locks and your credit card numbers when you realize you've been scammed. Florida should be at the forefront of combatting elder abuse but concentrates it's efforts only on lining the pockets of corrupt politicians. This is absolutely disgraceful...
