I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the care my son, Ma"- P:$ Jr, and I received at Jackson Memorial's Emergency Department on the night of November 14-15, 2024. Specifically, I wish to address the unprofessional conduct of Nurse Maddox and the overall inadequate care provided during our visit. On November 14, 2024, my son was evaluated by the E.R. staff following an incident in which he sustained a significant injury to the bridge of his nose. During this visit, Nurse Maddox demonstrated a complete lack of compassion and professionalism. Despite repeated requests to speak with the E.R. doctor, we were ignored and dismissed. When I expressed my desire to remain at my son's side due to his visible fear, Nurse Maddox responded, "You can't be here." I was taken aback, as this was the first emergency department I have encountered where family members were not allowed to remain with their loved ones. When I inquired why this was the case, Nurse Maddox provided an unsatisfactory and condescending response, stating that the reason was "patient privacy and the risk of infection. (Which is nonsense)" I pointed out the inconsistency of this explanation, given the open nature of the E.R. bays, where all patients and families could overhear one another's information. As a Nurse with extensive experience, including infection control, charge nurse, and unit manager roles, I felt my intelligence was insulted. Nurse Maddox's dismissive, unprofessional, and cocky demeanor caused unnecessary emotional distress and delayed my son's treatment. I subsequently requested to speak with a Charge Nurse (Alain Bermudez), hoping for a resolution. Charge Nurse Bermudez, however, proved equally unhelpful. A charge nurse's role includes diffusing situations and acting as an impartial mediator, but instead, he escalated the conflict. Despite explaining that I, too, am a nurse and appealing to him for professional courtesy, he remained adamant that I leave my son, stating, "You Need To Get Out, He will be OK". Also Charge Nurse Bermudez stated "if I let you stay, I gotta let everyone stay", not mention nurse Maddox told me previously I can stay for 5 mins, where Charge Nurse Bermudez told me "to get out!" Lastly, I asked Charge Nurse Bermudez can I speak with the MD i spoke with earlier who understood where I was coming from, Charge Nurse Bermudez said he's not there ( how convenient ). This was particularly disheartening, as my son--only two months past his 18th birthday--was injured, frightened, and in an unfamiliar environment. Frustrated by the lack of empathy and professionalism, I requested to sign an AMA form and sought care at a different hospital. At the second facility, I was treated with respect and understanding. I was allowed to remain by my son's side, and the staff conducted a comprehensive head-to-toe assessment, which was not performed at Jackson Memorial. If this is how your staff treats a fellow Nurse, I shudder to think how the general public is treated. No patient or family member should endure such dismissive and negligent care. Let me reiterate that the behavior of Nurse Maddox and Charge Nurse Benitez not only delayed my son's care but also caused undue emotional distress and eroded my trust in your hospital. Furthermore, I attempted multiple times to reach the director (David Diaz) of the unit to discuss this incident privately, leaving my contact information as requested. Despite assurances of a callback, I received no response.
I took my dad to the emergency room today. The front desk had the worst attitude. One expects that they would be compassionate and it's the worst that I have ever seen. I work in healthcare and I understand how challenging it can be, but it does not give the right to mistreat the patient's family. I am extremely disappointed.
I wanted to write this review because it's the least I can do to Thank on my behalf, my husband, and my family to the whole staff from Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby of this amazing hospital (Jackson North). There are not enough words to describe how grateful I feel for each one of the nurses, doctors, patient care team, etc...how well they have treated me and my family during my labor and post partum process. Everyone here showed us love, care, empathy, kindness, and so much more. I don't remember all the names but I do want to mention and give special thanks to my labor and delivery nurses (they were amazing, don't remember their names because I was out of it) also mother baby nurses such as Paul, Anna, and Lana. I'm so glad my baby was born in this hospital
