The University of Miami's Health System advertises, "You may have seen many doctors in many specialties, but they can't find the cause of these complex or unusual conditions" in advertising their undiagnosed disease specialists. They go on to discuss how they use cutting edge technologies and genetic testing to diagnose and treat complex illnesses. This is the reason I scheduled an appointment for my partner, who has been suffering with chronic pain and other issues for the past three years after undergoing a major surgery. Their first appointment was three months out. Based on the reputation of UM, and our desperation, I scheduled the appointment. A representative of UM Medical called a few days before our long-awaited appointment and asked me to send all his medical records. I promptly faxed EVERYTHING (over 30 pages). They then called the day before the scheduled appointment and said they were cancelling his appointment because "he had no diagnosis". That was the entire point of waiting three months to be seen at a "renowned" medical center claiming to specialize in undiagnosed diseases. I called back and asked for clarification. This time they said it was because "they did not have an infectious disease doctor who specialized in fungal infections". However, the medical records I sent them clearly indicated multiple times that my partner DID NOT have a fungal infection at this time. If you read the information at the link below, UM Medical promotes themselves as specializing in both undiagnosed diseases and fungal infections. However, on the first call they claimed to have cancelled the appointment because he lacked a diagnosis. On the second call claimed they don't have a doctor who is experienced in treating fungal infections, of their 1800 providers. This would mean they only treat patients who already have a diagnosis or are not suffering from a fungal infection. They either lied or did not know how to read and understand multiple lab reports. The worst thing is that they wasted three months' time resulting in unnecessary suffering, as if he has not endured enough at this point. This time could have been used to pursue other avenues for a diagnosis and treatment. Please spread the word about UM Medical's false advertising and dishonesty. Most importantly, spare yourself, loved ones and friends from wasting precious time that could cost them their lives.
Cant say enough about the doctors and their assistants. The billing department is a whole different story and the worst people in the world to deal with. The have no issues leaving you on the hook for things they promised are covered under your policy.Issue, Bad faith/misrepresentation of insurance benefits. The insurance benefit verification approval is done twice. Once when you sign off on the approvals based off what they tell you is covered under your policy and again just prior to procedure. Remember your counting on them to make sure their getting approval for the whole procedure and not just parts of it. This is their responsibility .There is nothing more unethical...read full review
