I have a feeling that my father and his sister which was my aunt is buried here. I don’t know much about this cemetery but I could be wrong. Or I could have relatives from his side of the family that’s buried there.

My grandmother is buried here. I did not have the time to actually find her but the grass is cut and walking around you can see it is taken care of. Some of the graves are worn and hard to read but it was beautiful to see the history of the cemetery. Will visit again and see if I can find grandma’s grave.

Bahamian immigrates moved to this area known today as West Grove in Coconut Grove in the late 1800's. A mass immigration from the Bahamas to South Florida and the Keys took place when agriculture became unsustainable due to rocky soil. Most of the Bahamians that settled in Coconut Grove were from the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Many were former slaves from West Indian Plantations. Florida had a similar geography and climate so the people who immigrated knew how to farm the land. Later in the 1920's, many were hired by George Merrick to build nearby Coral Gables. Charlotte Jane Memorial Cemetery is a historic cemetery in West Coconut Grove. The first burials took place in the 1850's. The Grove's Bahamian settlers started using it in 1906. Some of the graves were moved here from a small lot that opened in 1904 on the 3500 block of Charles Avenue. In 1913 the land for the cemetery was purchased for $140.00 by five prominent families; the Burrows, Higgs, Reddick, Ross and E.W. F. Stirrup. E.W.F. Stirrup made a lot of money by selling land to many of the new Bahamian immigrants so they could build homes. Charlotte Jane was E.W.F. Stirrup's wife. The Coconut Grove Colored Cemetery Association was formed to maintain the cemetery. The burials in this cemetery are above ground to prevent flooding of the caskets. There is no layout to this cemetery and the graves are tightly packed with about a foot between each grave. Lincoln Memorial in Brownsville is also this style of cemetery. Many of Coconut Groves' Bahamian pioneers are buried in Charlotte Jane. They include Joseph Mayor who owned the bicycle shop, Daniel Anderson, a Bahamian sailor and his wife Catherine who was one of the founders of Christ Episcopal Church, and Captain John Sweeting, a developer and commercial fisherman, and his family. There are also many unmarked graves. Owned by the City of Miami, the cemetery is still cared for by the Coconut Grove Cemetery Association and is recognized as an historic site. Interesting fact, the graveyard is said to have inspired the one in the Michael Jackson video, Thriller.
