If not for a personal relationship with the client, I would not have accepted the audit engagement. I met with the IRS auditor and did exactly what Dan coached me to do to develop a rapport with the auditor and his manager and walked away from the audit with a favorable result for my client which was getting additional time submit documents, getting penalties abated as well some deductions allowed (that otherwise would have been denied due to lack of or little support).
