[MY REVIEW IS FOR THE EVERGREEN CEMETERY IN NEW HAVEN VERMONT BUT YELP BEING YELP MERGED IT WITH THE EVERGREEN CEMETERY IN NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT.]Evergreen is a normal lawn-type cemetery. Lanes through it are walkable or driveable. There are rows of neat headstones. The grass is well trimmed. But there's one particularly interesting plot: Timothy Clark Smith.Mister Clark designed and rigged his own tomb in an attempt to prevent his nightmare of an undesirable outcome. He installed a set of stairs underneath a large square capstone beside his burial mound, and is said to have been buried with a bell in his hand and a breathing tube. The most noticeable piece is the horizontal window he installed, six feet above and centered on his face. However, he was buried in 1893 and you can only see a few inches into the six-foot-long tomb as the glass has aged and there is quite a lot of moisture. There are no accounts that his burial was anything other than normal. The cemetery is open 24 hours. Mister Clark's grave is noticeable for the mound around it and the square concrete above it. If it's rained recently, watch your step on the incline.[Review 18492 overall - 91 in Vermont - 2014 of 2022.]
I came to Evergreen Cemetery for the sole purpose of visiting the resting place of Sarah Winchester - heiress of the Winchester gun magnate fortune and creator of the Winchester Mystery House back in my home state of California! The cemetery grounds are absolutely massive and gorgeous! Very peaceful once you get inside...but outside of the cemetery the neighborhood is super sketchy! The entrance is easy to find right off a Main Street. The grave is a tad hard to find - I used the cemetery map and the instructions from Atlas Obscura as much as I could and eventually found it. Basically take a left (on Lake Ave I think???) at the first building you see once you enter and it's just up around the first curve on the right...I was able to find it by spotting the large memorial headstone recognized from the pictures. If you end up by the lake itself, that ain't it lol. The grounds were so serene and beautiful that I ended up driving around a little - lovely! Be aware though that the roads are pretty narrow.
Visited this cemetery to locate the grave of Midnight Mary. It is a fascinating tale. The cemetery was very peaceful, quiet, and clean. The paths were labeled but we had a hard time finding the stone number markers. Mary Hart is located near marker 50 and 51 on the Winthrop Road side. The cemetery is large with a nice large fountain. The grounds were very well kept.
