I almost hesitate to review this place, and I tend to wait far too long between visits, I'm in and out in half an hour. As much as I used to enjoy reading the paper and yaking it up with the other customers while I wait, these days I simply don't the time; so, this place fits the bill just right. And, why would I want that to change? Speaking of bills, twelve dollars for a haircut, before tip, is unheard of anywhere but here. The price could only be better if you dusted off that flowbee you bought years ago, and quickly forgot about. Now, I have to make it clear that if a simple, old fashioned haircut is what you want, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a cut that will enable you to hob nob with the fashionable crem de la crem, you may want to keep browsing this app. In any event, if you do stop in, you'll be greeted by the sole barber; an older Italian gentleman, who will gladly demonstrate some of that old world charm.
Entering Natale Terranova's barber shop on Meadow Street just off Wethersfield Avenue is like stepping back in time. Crossing the threshold of this old-timey barber shop attached to the Terranova family's home takes you to a different time and place - someplace slower, friendlier and quieter than you expect to find today. A place your grampa might have taken you to. In many ways, it's a journey back to the South Side's glory days as Little Italy. A visitor has much to absorb after he enters the door. Something you can't miss, though, is the birds. A cluster of cages in the corner holds dozens of birds that flit about and chirp and sing, seeming to rise and fall in coordinated choruses. The first time I went to Terranova's, I paused a step inside the door, distressed to see a man in the vintage barber's chair and three other men seated in chairs along the wall. Fearing a long delay, I inquired how long I'd have to wait. The three guys along the wall responded with a mix of shrugs, grunts, waves of their hands and a word or two indicating "You're next." So, don't be worried if there seems to be a wait. The Italian gentlemen from the neighborhood are likely to be there just there to talk, watch Serie A football and enjoy the free air conditioning. It's a barber shop turned gathering place, just like in the olden days. Visit Terranova Haircut while you can! You'll get a good haircut for a lot less than almost any other place and take a trip back in time
