“We adopted a cattle dog mix in April. He had some bad behaviors such as lunging at cars, bikes, people and other dogs. After our lessons with Devon, his behavior is much improved. We can now take him hiking, walk him through Home Depot and past other dogs with no worries. We took him to the vet and she said “kudos to you and your trainer for his great behavior!” Best money we ever spent“

“My 18 month old St Bernard has always been sweet, but full of energy and too big for me to handle! He would jump and lunge and bark at strangers, dogs, and loud noises. I had tried some training classes when he was younger, but other than a non-distracted sit, we really struggled. He keeps getting bigger (and will continue to grow for awhile), and he had even knocked me over on a walk before we found Black Paw.Bernadette and the whole team at Black Paw not only helped my goofy guy learn his basics and get socialized around new things (including people and dogs), they also helped me find the right tools to manage a dog of his size and the right way to communicate with him. My partner and I brought home our first dog from the shelter in Nov last year, and we found out pretty quickly that he has some intense reactivity issues. We honestly weren't sure if we were equipped to keep him since we didn't have any experience training a dog with fearful/aggressive behaviors, but we decided to meet with a trainer.

Vanessa was really clear and straightforward with us from the start about what we could expect from training. She's been an amazing teacher-- we've learned a ton about what causes his reactivity, how to read his body language, how to keep him and others safe, and of course how to train better behaviors into him.

Our dog has made a TON of progress, and we were recently able to step down from weekly to monthly sessions. We can take him on hikes and walks comfortably, and he's getting more and more comfortable seeing other dogs around. He's a totally different dog than the jumpy and unpredictable lil boy we brought home from the shelter last year.

She really put my mind at ease (my dog isn't the only one with separation anxiety here; I was a mess), and she took care of Gus like he was her own. Her love for animals really shines through. Plus there are so many exciting smells on the property with the other animals who live there! That's great enrichment all on its own. “Where do I begin? Sheila and Robert deserve a lot more than 5 stars! I came into her lessons because I was not content with the lessons I was receiving from another barn (nothing against them, I just stalled in my training). I was a new rider at 28, and from day one, Sheila greeted me with a smile and an openness to understand my goals and how she could help me achieve them. Her horses are well-kept, happy, and safe. There is multiple horses for all skill levels, and Sheila will make sure that you feel comfortable, she offers opportunities to progress on new horses when she feels you're ready, and she will also push you to keep progressing! She does this through constant feedback, reassurance when needed, and a calm demeanor. You're never REQUIRED to do anything, but she will ask if you "want to try" this, that, or the other thing. If there is something that you need to keep progressing, she will make it happen. I couldn't imagine ever riding at a different barn! Sheila's knowledge is priceless, and each lesson offers a plethora of it! Thank you guys for everything you do for us! It does not go unnoticed!“
