Sansum's SurgiCenter is entered through a heavy door with no automatic opener button and no door stop. FOUR wheelchair patients struggled mightily to get in, including an elderly retired Sansum physician who I had to assist in wheeling his wife in. All the waiting room outlets are funky so it's impossible to charge one's cell. There is no cafeteria, snack station, or vending machine on the promises. The one on a lower floor was done away with, apparently. No new gleaming edifice can replace a well-designed patient environment and this one is bottom of the barrel. Northwestern, the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, and UCLA - all ancient by comparison - far surpass this white elephant..
Less than a year after surgery, it's begun to fail. I don't have any pain or discomfort to speak of, but it's beginning to bulge out. Dr. Howard confirmed the failure, but recommended living with it, if it didn't bother me. He is a nice guy and maybe the best surgeon around, but I believe I will get a second opinion from a different doctor.
Dr. Benjamin Howard is anti-pain meds. So if you want minimal to no pain meds after surgery and to be in pain immediately after surgery then go to this dr. When I asked for more pain meds I was told I had to wait until I picked up from pharmacy (I live out of town so 2 hours away). I basically had to get dressed and leave while in pain and be driven 2 hours to get any relief. The pain med he gave was the minimum amount that could be given and if taken as directed you would be out by day 2! The nurse said day 3-5 are the worst for hernias (I had hernia surgery). He pushed taking ibprophen and Tylenol only and if still in pain then use the pain med. Well when I did all 3 I did great. But that isn't what the doctor wants you to do - he wants you to be in pain and take no pain pills. I called to request a few more since I would be out as of day 2. Mind you I am asking for 5mg (smallest amount which was given). I was made to feel like an addict. After 4 calls back and forth no pain meds were given. I have no history of any addictions just wanted to not feel the pain. I have never gotten out of surgery and expected to stay in pain. This doctor does not believe in pain meds so if you have a low pain tolerance or you just want to not feel pain - THEN THIS ISN'T THE DOCTOR FOR YOU! I won't recommend to anyone nor will I return.
