Despite nearly 10 years working relationship with Brian, he just completely ghosted me for filing my return this year. I reached out 1 week before this year's filing deadline to coordinate filing. I was told that if I provided info this weekend (the weekend before the filing deadline) that I was on my own ("I'm not taking anything on the weekend to turn around something by Monday. Not happening."). Hm, a bit rude but also: fair enough! When I proposed that timeline I had forgotten the deadline was Monday. I apologized an asked when in the week he'd need my info to at least get a rough estimated payment together for an extension. No reply. I pinged a gain a couple days later. Still no reply. I find this an unacceptable level of professionalism and responsiveness from an accountant that I've worked with for 10 years. Do not recommend. Good news is I filed on TurboTax in 3.5 hours today, for $200 where Brian's office cost me $1500 each year and still took around that same amount of time.
Worked with them for years, they made a small mistake which resulted in our getting a confusing notice from CA FTB. Brian refused to look into what had happened, and did not return phone calls or emails. Glad we found a new accountant, because we also got "ghosted" when it came time for a new organizer this year. Also are shut out of the online portal, with no notice. How hard is it to fire a client by sending a "thank you for working with us but we are taking a new direction and we wish you the best you have a week to get your stuff from our portal" form letter? I am not impressed with this guy's ethics. Do not recommend.
12/20/2022 - If you come within 1000 miles of Brian Mah CPA or anyone at Mah & Associates, flee, run, get away as fast as you can and count yourself lucky. A year ago upon the retirement of our long term like 30 year San Francisco CPA, and upon asking around reliable sources for a recommendation, I was led to Brian Mah CPA and Mah & Associates in San Francisco. It was the summer before the next April tax season. Brian was all friendly and a big competent sell. He would look after my family and my now adult children for their lifetimes after I am deceased. He would timely file our tax returns and explained his minimum annual fee and offered to bill time and materials for my daughters and forthwith through their lifetimes. I sent him all our family materials and previous year tax returns both State and Federal. Then not much later in the early fall it was apparent we would have to final final fiduciary tax returns both State and Federal for our family trust funds as those accounts were being terminated. Assuming Brian Mah was our family's new CPA I wrote him by email and asked him if he would be taking care of this one time extra work for the additional filings and what his fees for this would be. He never responded. I wrote him again. And then I discovered these fiduciary tax returns would be about 100 pages each and thought this was outside of his office skill set or interests. He never responded yes or no. Then the new year came. I was surprised by the end of January that I nor my adult daughters had received from Brian Mah and Mah & Associates any correspondence including Tax Organizers to be filled out by each of us for our 2021 tax filings. I called the Office a couple of times and each time the front desk woman said he would call me back the next day. He never did. Then by early March 2021 it appeared we were being "ghosted." I did some research here on Yelp on Mah & Associates and found other postings that Brian Mah and Mah & Associates are known for disappearing even after filing faulty returns pegged by the IRS. I looked on Glass Ceiling website and found the office (albeit by 3rd parties posting, employees) is an environment of high turnover, yelling, screaming and tears. I was cornered. Who, what firm would take us on and file our 2021 State and Federal returns at this late date? I called some other referrals on my old list and those firms were not taking new clients. Finally, I called my old CPA who had retired, told him the truth and he and his firm stepped up to the plate and filed our California, Missouri & Federal Fiduciary Tax returns and filed our California and Federal individual tax returns. Let this review be a WARNING to anyone considering employing Brian Mah and Mah & Associates in San Francisco to file any of your tax returns. You are walking into a dangerous minefield of mirrors, misrepresentation and lies and more. Good luck finding a more competent representation.
