San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate is a member dojo of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), which was founded by Tsutomu Ohshima, one of the last remaining students of Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate. The dojo is proud of its direct lineage from the founding of karate, as well as SKA's unique status as the organizer of the oldest, continuously-run karate tournament in America. Remaining non-commercial and non-profit, the dojo offers high-quality martial arts instruction to the public. They practice in Liberty Station in Point Loma and in Pioneer Park in Mission Hills. The dojo is led by experienced and passionate instructors, such as Erik, Gary, and Brian, who prioritize the traditional values of karate, including discipline, tradition, strategy, and the internal spirit. Participants from across 11 SKA dojos in Southern California have attended the dojo's practices, which focus on techniques like jiyu kumite (free sparring). The dojo is highly regarded for its commitment to preserving the authentic teachings of Master Funakoshi, as passed down through the lineage of Tsutomu Ohshima Sensei and Shihan John Teramoto. If you are seeking an authentic, challenging martial art with deep cultural roots, the San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate dojo is worth your time, money, and dedication.
